GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T baseball suffered a heartbreaking walk-off defeat for the second straight game, Friday night's loss carrying even more weight as it came in a tense 6-5 Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) loss to College of Charleston at Patriots Point.
The Aggies dropped to 9-23 overall and 3-10 in league play following another heartbreaking defeat. Charleston got a 3-for-3 evening with two RBIs and a run scored from Reece Holbrook to improve to 14-19 overall and 6-7 in the CAA.
Charleston got the win despite falling behind early. A&T took the lead in the game in the visitors' seventh inning when sophomore
Bruce Wyche doubled home senior
Nick DiCarlo against left-hander Parker Sweeney (W, 2-1), who entered the game after RHP Kaden Myers walked DiCarlo and struck out Taylor before Wyche stepped to the plate.
Wyche's RBI double gave the Aggies a 5-4 lead. Charleston's Alex LaCoste tied the game for the second time on Friday with an RBI sacrifice fly to center field. That set up the happenings of the home ninth inning with graduate right-hander
Kobie Cushing (L, 1-3) on the mound for the Aggies.
The inning started with Cushing hitting Dylan Johnson with the first pitch of the inning. LeCoste singled up the middle, which sent Johnson to third with no outs. An Ethan Plyler groundout sent LeCoste to second, giving the Cougars men on second and third with one out. The Aggies made the decision to intentionally walk Landon Penfield to set up a potential double play to exit the inning.
A&T moved a step closer to forcing extra innings when Jackson Berini popped out to second. But Cushing walked Will Tippett to force in Johnson from third base for the walk-off victory. The Aggies lost on a walk-off single on Tuesday night against High Point University. On Saturday, they looked like they recovered, putting together an impressive first inning.
DiCarlo got A&T going with a leadoff single, followed by another single from sophomore
JT Taylor. Wyche delivered a two-run double to give the Aggies a 2-0 lead. A&T kept striving against Cougars starter, RHP Carter Harrington. Taylor led off the third inning with a single to left field, followed by another extra base hit from Wyche, a two-run home run to left field to give the Aggies a 4-0 lead.
Wyche has become the hottest bat in the Aggies lineup. He is on a seven-game hitting streak, and over his last 11 games, he is hitting .514 (19-37) with two home runs, 11 RBIs, five doubles, seven extra base hits, 13 runs scored, and 30 total bases. Wyche went 3-for-4 on Friday and accounted for all five of A&T's RBIs. He also scored once. Despite Wyche's best efforts, however, the Cougars rallied, starting with two runs in the home third.
Tippett hit a one-out homer to left field off A&T starter and RHP
Gavin Sentell. Holbrook followed with a single before moving to second on a groundout. Nick Diaz brought him home with a single up the middle to cut A&T's lead to 4-2. Holbrook tacked on two runs in the home fourth with a two-run double down the left field line to tie the game 4-4 before Wyche reclaimed the lead for the Aggies in the seventh.
DiCarlo, Taylor, and sophomore
Boaz Harper also had multiple-hit games for the Aggies. A&T will try to even the series on Saturday when they face the Cougars at 2 p.m. from Patriots Point.
