ORLANDO, Fla. – North Carolina A&T women's tennis secured a win on its spring break trip to the USTA National Campus.
The Aggies defeated Davenport University 5-2 on Thursday at the USTA Tennis Center. After a 7-0 loss to the Atlantic-10's Temple University Owls on Monday and a postponement against another Group of Five school, the Villanova Wildcats on Tuesday, the Aggies returned to the courts on Thursday and improved to 3-2 on the season behind a gritty performance that saw A&T take two of three in doubles play before dueling in three, three-set matches in singles competition.
A&T started with an impressive win at No. 3 doubles. Sophomore Dorsa Cheraghi teamed with senior Hana El Sherif to defeat the Davenport duo of Amy Bloch and Alice Maccani 6-3. The Aggies also earned a win at No. 1 doubles. The sophomore combo of Flavia Villegas and Jauna Gomez Weiss defeated Sienna Opray and Skye Vandeleur 6-3.
The one setback for A&T in doubles came at No. 2. Davenport's Addison Lind and Maja Sandstrom won over an A&T junior tandem of Randy Rakotoarilala and Tabeth Tadoum 6-4. After earning the hard-fought doubles point, the Aggies took a 2-0 advantage thanks to Gomez Weiss.
Villegas kept the momentum going for A&T with a straight-set, 7-5, 6-1 win over Lind at No. 6 singles. El Sherif added to her career win total by clinching things for the Aggies at No. 1 singles with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Vandeleur. It was career victory No. 15 for El Sherif. The Aggies then went into a series of three-set matches, starting with a thriller at No. 4 singles.
Cheraghi took the first set off Sandstrom, 6-4, before enduring a 6-3 loss in the second. The two fought in a third set with Sandstrom coming out on top 10-3 at No. 4 singles. Davenport added another point when Lotte Federski and Tadoum went at each other for three sets at No. 5 singles. Federski took the first round, 6-3, but Tadoum recovered to win the second set 6-4 before Federski came away with the 10-6 win in the third.
A&T did claim one of the three-setters, and what a three-setter it was. Rakotoarilala won 6-2, 3-6, and 14-12 at No. 2 singles. The Aggies are scheduled to face St. Bonaventure at 9 a.m. on Friday to conclude their time in Florida.
