ORLANDO, Fla. – North Carolina A&T women's tennis concluded its time in Florida at the USTA National Campus with a 5-2 win over the St. Bonaventure Bonnies at the USTA Tennis Center on Friday. The Aggies went 2-1 during their spring break trip to Florida, improving to 4-2 on the season.
It was a big win for the women's program over an Atlantic-10 as the Aggies continue to showcase what they can do with a completely healthy roster.
The Aggies got off to a quick start by claiming the doubles point. Freshman Valeria Fomenko entered the A&T lineup for the first time in Florida, teaming with senior Hana El Sherif to win at No. 3 doubles, 6-2, over Gabriella Blumberg and Kanish Bote. Sophomore Flavia Villegas moved to the No. 1 spot in doubles, partnering with sophomore Juana Gomez Weiss. They lost to Tamara Bachmann and Sara Montano Parada 6-2.
At No. 2 doubles, the Aggies captured the point. Junior Randy Rokotoarilala and junior Tabeth Tadoum defeated Kelly Barnes and Sienna Smith 6-3. The Bonnies evened the match, starting with a win in singles play. Montano Parada defeated El Sherif 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Gomez Weiss got the Aggies back on track at No. 3 singles. She took down Smith with a straight set, 6-2, 6-2 victory.
Villegas followed with another A&T straight set win, defeating Barnes 6-2, 6-2. Rokotoarilala secured another win at No. 2 singles, giving the Aggies the necessary 4-1 advantage with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Bachmann. Rokotoarilala is 4-2 this season, all at No. 2 singles. Tadoum kept the momentum going with a difficult challenge at No. 5 singles. Tadoum defeated Blumberg 6-4 in the first set before completing the job 7-6 in the second set as the set went into a tiebreaker.
The Bonnies claimed another win at No. 4 singles, with Bote defeating sophomore Dorsa Cheraghi 4-6, 7-5, 6-1. The Aggies will return to action on Wednesday, March 11, when they host the Norfolk State Spartans at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center at 1 p.m.
