GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T baseball returned the offensive favor to the Georgetown Hoyas on Saturday, scoring double-figure runs in a 13-8 win at War Memorial Stadium.
On Friday, the Hoyas scored 17 runs to win the non-conference season opener. The Aggies' offensive outburst evened the series and improved A&T to 6-19 overall. The Hoyas are 16-11 and will matchup with the Aggies for the rubber game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m., from The War.
Outstanding pitching has not been the narrative throughout the series. However, the Aggies received solid late-inning relief from graduate right-hander
Diego Barrett (W, 1-2). He pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, gave up no hits or walks, and struck out five. Junior RHP
Jacob Fields added an inning of scoreless relief. He allowed only one base runner, who reached on a walk. A&T starter, sophomore right-hander
Jordan Bright, gave up a hit in the top of the first but prevented Georgetown from scoring.
After going without a run over the first three innings of Friday's game, the Aggies got the bats popping early on Saturday. Senior
Andrew Tinsley kept his bat aflame with a one-out single up the middle. The single improved his hitting streak to seven games. Over those seven games, he is batting .423 (11-26) with four home runs, 14 RBIs, and nine runs scored after going 2-for-4 on Saturday.
RHP and Georgetown starter Trajan Lee gave up a walk to Aggies sophomore
Tyler Smith. This put runners on first and second before he struck out sophomore
Bruce Wyche. However, Lee could not get out of the inning after hitting sophomore
JT Taylor with a 1-0 pitch. That mistake led to senior catcher
Luis Gomez ripping a three-run single to center field, giving the Aggies an early 3-0 lead. Georgetown methodically overcame A&T's fast start.
The Hoyas posted one run in the second, another run in the third. The Aggies did interrupt in the home third when Wyche belted a solo home run to right field for his second home run of the season and the 11th of his career. Wyche had a tremendous day at the plate, posting a 3-for-5 day that included the home run, two doubles, three runs scored, and five RBIs. But the Hoyas responded by gobbling together a big four-run fourth inning to take a 6-4 lead.
Jeremy Shefield provided the big swing with a two-run home run. The Aggies went down in order in their half of the fourth, but not the fifth. In the fifth, aided by three hits, two errors, and two walks, A&T scored five times to regain the lead. Tinsley's one-out base hit put the Aggies on first and second after junior
Marcus Bradshaw reached on an error. Smith walked to load the bases for Wyche. Wyche then delivered a three-run RBI double to give the Aggies a 7-6 lead.
A Hoya error allowed Taylor to reach, ending the afternoon for Trajan. RHP Jack Volo entered the game and walked Gomez to load the bases. Junior
Jason Campo took advantage with a two-run single to center field to increase A&T's lead to three runs. But Georgetown rallied.
A Travis Illtch single and a Connor Peek double put runners on second and third. Sheffield grounded out to score Illtch. Peek moved third on a passed ball and scored on a passed ball after a Christian Hamilton strikeout. With A&T's lead down to one run, 9-8, junior RHP
Aiden Hansen walked Connor Price, leading to Barrett entering the game.
After giving up a single to Ashtin Gilio, Barrett became stingy. Before Barrett could return to the mound, the Hoyas opened the sixth by putting RHP Max Whitmer on the mound. He could not slow down the Aggies offense. With runners on first and third, Tinsley hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Acevedo, who had walked to open the frame. Smith singled to right-center, moving Bradshaw (who singled earlier) to third. Bradshaw then scored on a wild pitch, giving A&T an 11-8 lead. Wyche followed with an RBI double to score Smith. RHP Will Newell entered the game. Taylor reached on an infield single to move Wyche to third. Wyche scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by Gomez, giving the Aggies a five-run advantage.
Barett kept the Hoyas off the board in the seventh and eighth innings. Dylan Larkins reached base on a leadoff walk from Fields before a double play erased him from the base paths. Fields got Braxton Temple to ground out to secure the win for the Aggies. Gomez drove in four runs for the home team, Taylor scored three times, and Campo went 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Sheffield led the Hoyas, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored.
