WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – North Carolina A&T tried to overcome a six-run deficit but fell short in a 9-5 loss to the William & Mary Tribe on Friday in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) baseball at Plumeri Park.
Despite dropping to 4-16 overall and 2-5 in CAA play, senior
Nick DiCarlo improved his hitting streak to 10 straight games. He went 2-for-5. DiCarlo has also reached base safely in his last 12 games. William & Mary improved to 8-12 overall and 1-3 in league play. They were led by Jamie Laskofski and Trey Christman, who had three hits apiece.
Senior right-handed pitcher
Gavin Sentell (L, 1-3) got the start for the Aggies. He gave up four runs in the home fourth, mainly behind a three-run homer from Witt Scafdi. The Aggies got two of those runs back in the visitors' second inning. Senior
Andrew Tinsley blasted a two-run homer over the left-field wall. He brought home sophomore
JT Taylor, who walked with one out.
Tinsley's homer, his first of the season and fourth of his career, helped the Aggies, but the Tribe responded with an RBI single from Christman to go up 5-2. In the Aggies' third, LHP Charlie Richwine (W, 1-1) replaced right-handed starter Stephen Christopher, pitching three scoreless innings, allowing four hits, and striking out three. RHP Daniel Lingle then took over for the sixth with a scoreless frame, followed by LHP Tom Bourque's scoreless seventh.
Meanwhile, the Tribe built an 8-2 lead before the Aggies rallied in the visitors' eighth against Bourque. After sophomore
Bruce Wyche walked on four pitches, sophomore
Savoi Edwards hit a two-run homer to left field, cutting the Tribe's lead to 8-4. It was Edwards' second home run of the season and seventh of his career as the Aggies kept the momentum.
Taylor walked, and Tinsley reached on a throwing error, advancing him to second and Taylor to third with one out. Redshirt freshman
Caleb Beals then grounded out for the second out, but brought home Taylor to cut the lead to three. However, freshman
Luis Acevedo grounded out to end the frame. RHP Jett Humphreys then pitched a scoreless, hitless ninth to secure the win for the Tribe.
Game 2 of the series will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Plumeri Park.
