GREENSBORO – UNC Wilmington pitcher Camille Hamilton (W, 5-2) pitched a perfect game against the North Carolina A&T softball team on Friday, leading the Seahawks to an 8-0 win over the Aggies in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play at the Lady Aggies Softball Complex (LASC). Hamilton had 11 strikeouts in 69 pitches thrown in her no-hitter. UNCW played in its CAA opener on Friday, improving to 13-10 overall. The Aggies dropped to 13-16 overall and 0-4 in CAA play.
Hamilton's pitching counterpart, A&T junior
Devin Long (L, 3-5), had a solid start. She gave up three earned runs on four hits before leaving the game in the fourth inning after giving up back-to-back doubles to open the frame.
The Seahawks went into the fourth inning with a 2-0 lead. After the back-to-back doubles, UNCW increased its lead to three runs. Sophomore
Lauren Hardy entered the game. A fielding error put runners on first and third for the Seahawks. Cassidy Relay grounded out to score Allison Corbin, who earlier doubled in a run, giving the Seahawks a 4-0 advantage.
Ava Brookshire added an RBI double in the fifth inning to increase UNCW's lead to five before a three-run sixth inning put UNCW in position to end the game early because of softball's run-rule. Sierra Persinger's three-run RBI double delivered the decisive blow, giving the Seahawks an 8-0 advantage. A&T went down in order in the bottom of the sixth, and by virtue of UNCW leading by eight or more runs after five innings played, the game ended.
Brookshire led the Seahawks with a 3-for-3 day that included two runs scored, two doubles, and an RBI. The two teams will play Game 2 of their three-game set on Saturday, with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. from the LASC.
