GREENSBORO – Redshirt freshman
Lewis Walker took down one of Joe Binion's records on Saturday, which is a big, big deal in the world of North Carolina A&T men's basketball. But he would have preferred winning the game, something else Binion was widely known for at A&T.
The Aggies lost their fourth straight with a 79-71 loss to the Campbell Fighting Camels, Saturday at Corbett Sports Center. The loss dropped the Aggies to 9-14 overall and 2-10 in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA). The Camels got 24 points, eight rebounds and four assists on 8-for-12 shooting from the field and 3-for-4 shooting from 3-point range to improve Campbell to 12-13 overall and 6-6 in league play.
Walker's 17 points helped him break the program's single-season scoring record for a freshman. Walker has 421 points this season. Binion scored 418 points during his freshman campaign in 1980-81. Binion (1980-84) went on to lead the Aggies to three Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championships, three NCAA tournament appearances, and one NIT appearance, all while becoming the Aggies all-time leading scorer, a distinction he still holds today.
"Any time you are mentioned with Joe Binion, someone who is high, high up in A&T lore, that's pretty special," said A&T head coach Monté Ross.
Despite the enormous accomplishment, Ross and his Aggies basketball team could not quite find the right gear to sustain enough momentum to give A&T the edge it needed to overcome Campbell. A&T's 12-for-21 (.571) showing at the free throw line did not help, and the Aggies, who normally out-rebound their opponents, were out-rebounded 39-34. That helped the Camels end the game with a 17-8 advantage in second-chance points. In addition, starting point guard
Trent Middleton, Jr., never got going after picking up two fouls within the first three minutes of the game.

Bryson Ogletree dunk gave the Aggies an 8-7 lead four minutes into the game. Campbell responded with a Johnson 3-pointer to take a 10-8 lead. The Aggies never led again and trailed by as many as 10 in the first half. However, the Aggies got to within two, 38-36, on a transition bucket that started with a steal from sophomore
Dwayne Pierce and turned into freshman
Brooklyn Vick finding Walker for a layup with a minute to play in the first half.
Chris Fields, Jr.'s turnaround jumper before halftime gave Campbell a 40-36 lead at the half. Fields's 3-point play eight minutes into the second half gave Campbell its biggest lead of the game at 53-40.
"We went down 13 because we weren't scoring, and that was disconcerting," said Ross. "We didn't play well offensively tonight, and I expected us to. We need to go back to the drawing board, go back to practice, and get some rhythm to us because, for some reason, we didn't have it tonight. The most disconcerting thing is that we are the second-best free throw shooting team in the conference, and we shot 57 percent."
The closest the Aggies got after Campbell took a 13-point lead was six when Vick drove to the basket and scored to cut Campbell's lead to 73-67 with 50 seconds remaining in the game.
"We never made that play that we always make, that we've been making to pressure on them," said Ross. "Like against Hofstra, we kept making that play to put pressure on them. Today, we didn't make that play."

Will Felton had 15 points and six rebounds on 6-for-8 shooting. Pierce added 10 points. The Aggies' next game will be in Los Angeles as a part of the NBA HBCU Classic taking place during NBA All-Star Week. The Aggies will play the other HBCU in the CAA, Hampton, at the Kia Forum on Friday, February 13, at 11 p.m. EST.
