WILMINGTON, NC – The North Carolina A&T women's basketball team had a regrettable third quarter on Friday in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play at UNC Wilmington. Unfortunately, they could not recover from that third quarter, falling 69-64 to the UNCW Seahawks at Trask Coliseum.
Fifth-year center
Chaniya Clark recorded her 23rd career double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, but the Aggies still dropped to 9-14 overall and 4-8 in conference play. Clark has four double-doubles this season.
Meanwhile, UNCW snapped a 10-game losing streak, improving to 6-17 overall and 2-10 in league play. UNCW's Rori Cox had a big night, scoring 33 points on 8-for-15 shooting from the field and 14-for-16 shooting from the free throw line.
A&T had a strong fourth quarter, scoring 24 points on 8-for-17 (.471) shooting from the floor and 4-for-8 (.5000 from 3-point range. Junior
Paris Locke led the way with seven points and freshman
Crystal Hardy netted two 3-pointers as the Aggies went into the second quarter leading 24-19. The Aggies grew their lead to 10, 38-28, when Locke followed her miss with 3 ½ minutes remaining in the first half.
UNCW's Angelina Pelayo scored on a jump shot with a minute remaining in the first half to send the Seahawks into the locker room trailing 38-30. Then, the third quarter came. The Aggies shot 2-for-11 (.182) from the field and missed all three of their 3-point attempts. The Aggies still led 45-40 midway through the third quarter after a
Paris Locke drive to the basket.
However, the Seahawks closed the quarter on a 10-1 run that included the Seahawks taking the lead for good on a Cox layup that gave UNCW a 46-45 advantage. They went into the fourth quarter leading 50-46. UNCW led by six, 61-55, with two minutes to play in the game before Clark knocked down a 3-pointer to cut the lead in half.
But Cox made four straight free throws to push the Seahawks' lead to seven with 46 seconds remaining on the clock. Graduate guard
D'Mya Tucker kept A&T alive by making a 3-pointer to cut UNCW's lead to 65-61, but Mary Feerrito knocked down two more free throws for UNCW, pushing its lead to six. Hardy knocked a 3-pointer with five seconds remaining, but it was not enough.
Locke added 14 points and three assists for the Aggies. Tucker added 10 points, nine rebounds and four assists. The Aggies return home after losing their last two games on the road. They will host the Hofstra Pride on Sunday, February 15, at 1 p.m. at Corbett Sports Center.
