GREENSBORO – The North Carolina A&T softball team started its season in Georgia with two wins and three strong pitching performances from junior
Aaliyah Williams.
Williams helped the Aggies go 2-3 at the Heart of Georgia Classic hosted by Mercer University in Macon, Ga. Williams made three appearances during the classic, going 1-0 with 15 strikeouts and a 2.23 ERA in 15.2 innings pitched. For her efforts, the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) named her Pitcher of the Week.
Williams, a junior out of Savannah, Ga., and a S.C. State University transfer, started the Aggies season opener in the circle last Friday against the Maine Black Bears. She pitched 6.1 innings and tossed a two-hitter without giving up a run. Maine scored two unearned runs in the top of the sixth inning before sophomore
Tyra Robinson's three-run blast in the A&T sixth led A&T to a 3-2 win.
Williams earned the win, striking out six in the process. On Saturday, she got the start against the Evansville Purple Aces. She tossed six more innings, surrendering only one earned run, striking out four with a no-decision in a 7-6 A&T win. She tossed 3.1 innings against Mercer on Sunday, striking out five in an A&T loss.
In winning her first-ever CAA weekly honor, Williams's walks plus hits per innings pitched stood at 1.28, while opponents only hit .220 against her. Tuesday marked the eighth time the Aggies have captured a weekly CAA honor since joining the conference in 2023.
Williams and the Aggies return to action Wednesday in Cullowhee, NC. The Aggies were scheduled to play their opener on Wednesday. However, the ice and snowstorms that blanketed the Triad Area over the past two weeks made the field conditions at the Lady Aggie Softball Complex inoperable. Instead, the Aggies will face the Western Carolina Catamounts in Cullowhee for a 2 p.m. doubleheader before heading to Covington, Ga., for the annual HBCU Collegiate Softball Invitational, Feb. 13-15.
