GREENSBORO – Once again, the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University volleyball team played strong in the first two sets before fading later as the College of Charleston Cougars completed a weekend sweep with a four-set win Saturday at Moore Gymnasium, 25-21, 19-25, 25-14, 25-18.
The Aggies dropped to 5-10 overall and are off to a 0-4 start in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) despite 15 kills and eight digs from junior
Tyne Ross. Junior
Agata Zwierzynska added 11 kills. Three Cougars players reached double-figure kills, led by Gabby Tuiaana with 13 kills and a .320 hitting percentage.
After jumping out to a 2-0 match lead on Friday, the Aggies took a 10-6 lead on a service ace from Ross. The Cougars answered with a 10-3 stretch to go ahead 16-13. The Aggies tied the first set at 17-17, and it was tied twice more, last at 19-19 on a Charleston service error by Helena Vukovic. Charleston scored the next three points, capped by an attack from
Zariah Winton.
A&T climbed back to within two at 22-20 on a Zwierzynska kill before the Cougars closed the set with a 3-1 spurt, ending it on a kill from Emma Duffield. Another fast start pushed the Aggies to a 13-7 second-set lead. That lead grew to eight, 19-11, on a Ross kill. Sophomore
Nicole Ellis and Zwierzynska teamed on a block assist to give the Aggies a 22-13 advantage.
A Vukovic service error gave A&T set point at 24-18 before Tuiaana pulled the Cougars within five with a kill. A Duffield attack error helped the Aggies tie the match at 1-1. The Cougars then took control of the third set midway through and made only one attack error, hitting .524 to win by 11.
In set No. 4, the Aggies jumped out to a 14-7 lead, with a block assist from Zwierzynska and junior middle blocker
Luca Radnai giving them a seven-point advantage. An 11-2 Charleston run erased the lead and put the Cougars ahead 18-16 on a kill from Duffield. Ross got the Aggies back within one on a kill, but the Cougars closed out the set and the match with a 7-1 spurt to improve to 14-2 overall and 6-0 in CAA play.
The Aggies will head on the road next week, trying to end an eight-match slide, as they face the William & Mary Tribe in a weekend series starting Friday, Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. inside Kaplan Arena. The series finale is Saturday at 4 p.m.
