Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

A&T Loses Again On A Buzzer-Beater

Lewis Walker hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 3.2 seconds remaining in the game before Drexel's game-winner.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Incredibly, the North Carolina A&T men's basketball team lost on another buzzer-beater.

Nearly 48 hours after Monmouth beat the Aggies on a 40-foot bank shot at the buzzer, Drexel's Kevon Vanderhorst caught an inbound pass from Victor Panov right before halfcourt, raced down the floor, avoided a blocked shot attempt from A&T sophomore center Amadour Doumbia to lay the ball up and in fractions of a second before the buzzer sounded to give the Drexel Dragons a 61-60 win over the Aggies Saturday afternoon at Daskalakis Athletic Center.

"We're coming. We can beat anybody in this league. We can get beat by anybody in this league," said A&T head coach Monté Ross. "But we are not afraid of anybody. If we get down, we are going to come back. We're going to rumble."

It appeared the Aggies heard the call to let's get ready to rumble about 6 ½ minutes into the second half. At that point, the Aggies trailed 49-32 after Shane Blakeney hit a stepback 3-pointer. The Dragons went a little more than five minutes without scoring. A&T took advantage with A&T sophomore center Will Felton sparking an 8-0 run with a layup. Mujahiid Burton's tough 3-pointer with a defender in his face capped the run before Josh Reed scored going to the basket to push Drexel's lead to 51-40 with 7:15 remaining.

However, the Aggies were not done. They put together another spurt, this time outscoring the Dragons 12-2 over a 3 ½ minute span to get to within one, 53-52, on a Lewis Walker baseline jumper. Drexel scored the next four points before Zamoku Weluche-Ume stepped in front of Vanderhorst's pass and drove to the basket for a layup. Garfield Turner fouled Weluche-Ume on the play, leading to Weluche-Ume completing the 3-point play to cut the Dragons' lead to 57-55 with 91 seconds to play.

Blakeney, who served as the Dragons' primary offensive weapon throughout the game, scored on a tough post place inside to put Drexel ahead by four with 61 seconds remaining. Blakeney ended the game with 19 points and nine rebounds on 8-for-15 shooting from the field and 3-for-7 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc.

Junior guard Trent Middleton, Jr., playing in his hometown of Philadelphia, answered by hitting two free throws to put the Aggies down by two. Middleton's return home resulted in him posting 16 points, seven rebounds, four assists, a steal, and a blocked shot. After Middleton's free throws, Blakeney tried to extend the Dragons' lead, but saw his layup roll off the rim and into the grasp of Doumbia.

That led to what almost every Aggie in the building, watching on FloHoops, or on the radio, thought would be the game-winner. Walker set a screen and then popped open. He took a pass from Middleton and squared up for the open 3-pointer and splashed it through the nets to give the Aggies a 60-59 lead with 3.2 seconds remaining in the game. It marked the Aggies' first lead since the 11-minute mark of the first half.

"He has a flair for the dramatic," said Ross about his star freshman. "He has a passion. He plays with his heart on his sleeve, and I love him for it."

Unfortunately, it wasn't the game-winner. Vanderhorst's driving layup unbelievably led to the Aggies' second straight loss due to a buzzer-beater. Walker did finish with 19 points and five rebounds on 7-for-14 shooting. Sophomore Dwayne Pierce, the Aggies starting guard, did not play on Saturday, allowing freshman Brooklyn Vick to play 25 minutes. He took advantage by scoring 10 points and dishing out three assists. Weluche-Ume scored six points, ending his streak of scoring in double figures at 10 consecutive games.

A&T will play the last of its three straight games on the road when it travels to Charleston, SC, to face the College of Charleston Cougars in a 7 p.m., Thursday matchup at TD Arena.
