DURHAM – After shooting an even round 72 on Friday during the first day of the Rod Myers Invitational and John H. Ryan Memorial at the par-72, 7,154-yard Duke Golf Course, Senior Drew Walker shot 77 as the North Carolina A&T men's golf team remained in 11th place after Saturday's second round action.
After shooting a first-round 11-over 299 on Friday, the Aggies shot a second-round 302 and stand at 25-over 601 for the tournament. The host Duke Blue Devils lead the tournament at 12-under 564, followed by A&T's fellow Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) member UNC Wilmington. The Seahawks are two shots off the lead after shooting a two-round 566. Indiana University and Harvard are tied for third at 571.
Walker finished Friday's play tied for 13th. He started his day on the 10th and carded a bogey on the 15th before posting his first birdie of the season, a three on the par-4, 402-yard 16th. He proceeded to card six straight pars before a double bogey on the par-5 fifth moved him to 2-over for the day.
He recovered nicely on the 573-yard, par-5 seventh with an eagle to get to even par. He went par, par to end his first round before starting with a birdie on Saturday on the par 5, 573-yard 10th. However, three bogeys on the back nine and two more to start the front nine put Walker at 4-over on the day.
A double bogey on the fifth got him to 6-over. He birdied the seventh a day after scoring an eagle on the hole. Walker parred the final two holes he played on Saturday to finish with a two-round total of 5-over 149. He is in 46th place in a tie with sophomore teammate Ignacio Zapata. He trails junior teammate Camilo Marin, who is in 40th place.
Marin finished in a tie for 48th on Friday with a 75. His card included three birdies. Marin added two more birdies to his total on Saturday. He also had a bogey and a double bogey during the round to shoot 73 for a two-round total of 4-over 148. Marin opened his Saturday round on the 10th and parred every hole on the back nine.
He finally went into the red numbers when he carded a three on the par 4, 456-yard first. Three holes later, he birdied the par-4, 399-yard fifth to move to 2-under for the day. However, a double bogey on the sixth hole and a bogey on the eighth led to him finishing his round at 1-over.
Sophomore Javier Morgado carded four birdies on Friday, but two double bogeys led to him shooting 76. He had one birdie on Saturday and stands at 11-over 155 for the tournament. Graduate Tyler Partee blazed the back nine on Friday with four birdies, shooting a 35. But he shot 42 on the front nine to finish with a 77. He shot 82 on Friday.
The final round of the tournament is on Sunday.
