KANNAPOLIS, NC – Two North Carolina A&T freshmen men's golfers finished in a tie within the top 25 of the Irish Creek Collegiate hosted by Appalachian State at the par 70, 7,002-yard Club at the golf course.
The final round of the two-round tournament was completed on Tuesday, with freshmen Mauricio Alvardo and Javier Morgado finishing in a seven-way tie for 21st by shooting 145s. Alvardo shot a 5-over 70-75—145 while Morgado carded a 5-over 73-72—145. Morgado finished with the lowest score of Round 2 for A&T with his 72, moving from 28th place on Monday to finishing in the top 25.
A&T finished 11th as a team, shooting a two-round 31-over 591. Marquette won the tournament by shooting a 5-under 555, finishing 13 shots ahead of Old Dominion University (ODU) after the Monarchs shot 8-over 568. Morehead State completed the top three by shooting a 570.
Marquette's Vinny Cervantes captured the individual medalist honor by winning a playoff against Charleston Southern's Layne Lambert. Both men shot 4-under 136 during regulation to force the playoff. Marquette Max Lyons and Jacksonville State's Santiago Bailleres finished in a third-place tie at 3-under 137.
Morgado had a decent start to his round. He parred the par 4 ninth before scoring a birdie on the par 4, 436-yard 10th. After a bogey on the 11th, he returned to the red numbers by carding a four on the 584-yard par 5 14th. A bogey on 16 moved him to plus-1 for the round before he parred the next four holes.
His round became interesting from there. He bogeyed No. 3 and No. 4 before back-to-back birdie putts on 322-yard par 4 fifth and the 541-yard par 5 sixth moved Morgado to 1-over on the day. However, a bogey on No. 7 and a par on No. 8 led to Morgado finishing his day at 2-over.
A triple bogey greeted Alvarado to start his Tuesday round. Alvaro also bogeyed No. 10 but recovered nicely by parring the next three holes before birdieing the par 5 14th. Three more pars moved him to the 18th, where he finished the back nine with a four on the par 3 18th.
Morgado had another double bogey after making the turn, posting a six on the par 4 second, moving him to 6-over for the round. Again, Morgado settled himself and drained par putts on the next three holes before rolling in a birdie on the 541-yard par 5 sixth to end his day with a 75.
Freshman Pedro Pereia had the second-lowest score for the Aggies with a 73. He shot a 10-over 77-73—150 for the tournament. He carded four birdies on Tuesday, starting his day on the par 4 11th and scoring a birdie on the par 4, 425-yard 12th. After a bogey on 13, he birdied the par 5 14th. He went bogey and birdie before making the turn to No. 1. His birdie came on the par 3, 242-yard 18th.
Pereia parred three straight holes before a double bogey on four moved him to plus-1. He moved to even par with a birdie on the 417-yard par 4 seventh. But a bogey and double bogey led to him finishing the round with a 73.
Sophomore Camilo Marin made two birdies on Tuesday and shot 76 for the day and a 13-over 77-76—153 for the tournament. Freshman Agib Hughes and senior Tyler Partee shot 77 and 78, respectively.
The Aggies' next tournament will be the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Men's Golf Championship Tournament, April 20-22 in Swainton, NJ, at the Union League golf course.
