KANNAPOLIS, NC – After the first day and round of the Irish Creek Collegiate played at the par 70, 7,002-yard Club at Irish golf course, North Carolina A&T freshman men's golfer Mauricio Alvarado finds himself four shots off the lead following even-par 70 on Monday.

The leader in the clubhouse after Round 1 is Charleston Southern's Layne Lambert after he shot a 3-under 67. He leads Morehead State's Nolan Piazza behind one stroke following Piazza's 2-under 68 on Monday. There is a three-way tie for third place at 1-under, and Alvarado is in a 10-way tie for sixth place.

A&T is in ninth place, nine shots off the lead, following a first-day 15-over 295. Morehead State leads the tournament at even par, and Marquette is second after shooting a 4-over 284. Freshman Javier Morgado is in an eight-way tie for 28th at 3-over 73.

Alvarado started his day off scorching the golf course. He opened by carding a two on the par 3, 179-yard eighth before parring No. 9. He followed by birdieing the par 4, 436-yard 10th, and walked over to the 418-yard par 4 11th and posted a birdie there to move to 3-under for the round.

Unfortunately, two bogeys followed before he found success again on the 584-yard par 5 14th with his fourth birdie in seven holes played. Alvarado finished the back nine with a bogey and three straight pars to make the turn at 1-under.

A bogey on No. 1 moved him back to even par. Alvarado remained at even par until a bogey on the par 4 fifth moved him into plus numbers for the first time. He remedied that by closing his round with a three on the par 4, 417-yard seventh.

Morgado also had a good start to his round. He teed off at the par 4, 438-yard ninth and posted a birdie. Morgado started his back nine with seven straight pars before a bogey on 17 knocked him back to even par. A par on 18 started another streak of pars for Morgado, who put together four straight pars before a bogey on the par 4 fourth. His day ended with two more pars and two more bogeys.

Freshmen Agib Hughes and Pedro Pereira also had the scores count toward A&T's totals on Monday. Hughes is in a nine-way tie for 39th after shooting 75 on Monday. Pereira is in a 19-way tie for 57th. He shot a 77.

Sophomore Camilo Marin is also in 57th place, and senior Tyler Partee shot an 82 on Monday. The golfers return to the course Tuesday for an 8:30 a.m. tee-off time.
