Softball Falls Short Against SBU

Aaliyah Williams had a strong performance in the circle.

STONY BROOK, NY – The North Carolina A&T softball team could not overcome an early deficit to the Stony Brook University (SBU) Seawolves on Sunday, losing 5-2 to conclude the three-game series.

The Aggies dropped to 9-27 overall and 2-13 in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play. Sophomore Avery Evans led the Aggies by going 2-for-3 with a run scored. The Seawolves completed the sweep of A&T, improving to 15-17 overall and 10-5 in league play.

The Seawolves got off to a 3-0 first-inning lead against A&T sophomore starter Aaliyah Williams (L, 2-9). Aaliyah Williams recovered in the second inning. After giving up a one-out single, she retired the next two batters she faced, leading A&T into the third inning.

A&T put together a threat in the third after SBU starter Crimson Rice (W, 6-4) walked junior Camryn Caldwell and freshman Jaden James. But a groundout ended the rally. Aaliyah Williams returned to the circle and retired the Seawolves in order in the third before the Aggies gave her some help in the visitor's fourth.

Sophomore Trinity Glover drew a one-out walk before an infield single from Evans put runners on first and second. Sophomore Jamari Moss followed with a single. On the play, a throwing error allowed Glover to score, cutting the Seawolves lead to 3-1. Another SBU throwing error allowed Evans to score on a Destiny Sims groundball to get the Aggies to within one run. With Aggies at second and third with two outs, a groundout ended the A&T's threat.

The Aggies could not get any closer, and SBU added some insurance runs. In the fourth, an RBI sacrifice fly gave the Seawolves a 4-2 lead in the home fourth. An RBI double in the fifth gave SBU a three-run lead. A&T got a hit in the sixth and went down in order in the seventh to end the game.

The Aggies return to action when they travel to Newark, Del., to face the Delaware Blue Hens in a three-game CAA series, Aprill 11-13. The series opener is 5 p.m., Friday at Delaware Softball Stadium.
