Monmouth Avoids Sweep With Sunday Win Over A&T

Bruce Wyche and JT Taylor had two hits apiece.

GREENSBORO – The Monmouth avoided a Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) baseball series sweep on Sunday at War Memorial Stadium with a 13-0 win. The Aggies did take two of three from the Hawks after sweeping a Saturday doubleheader.

The two Saturday games were one-run ballgames, including a walk-off single from junior Andrew Tinsley in Game 2. But Game 3 had a different feel as the Hawks methodically built a lead over eight innings before exploding for a seven-run ninth inning.

Despite the loss, the Aggies are still in a three-way tie for second with William & Mary and College of Charleston at 7-5. The Aggies are 12-22 overall after freshmen Bruce Wyche and JT Taylor posted two hits apiece. Monmouth remained in the hunt to earn a berth in the CAA tournament by improving to 17-19 overall and 5-7 in league play. Jay Bent led the Hawks by going 3-for-5 with three RBIs, two runs scored and a home run.

Junior right-hander Sean Duke (L, 0-2) got the start for the Aggies. He pitched two innings, surrendering one run and two hits while striking out two. Meanwhile, RHP Ryan Mealy (W, 4-0) pitched a complete-game six-hit shutout, striking out 10 Aggies along the way.

Monmouth only held a 1-0 lead going into the fourth. Wyatt Hunt provided the Hawks with an RBI sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead. The Aggies threatened against Mealy in the home fourth as Wyche led off the frame with a single but was caught stealing for the second out in the inning. Taylor tried to keep the rally going with a single. He advanced to second on a passed ball before freshman Savoi Edwards grounded out to end the threat.

Bant gave the Hawks a 4-0 with a two-run homer in the visitor's fifth. Another threat against Mealy's shutout occurred in A&T's fifth. Senior Kristian Amaro and Tinsley led off the frame with singles. However, senior Enrique Wood popped out, junior Nick DiCarlo hit into a force play, and sophomore Jason Campo struck out to end the inning.

The Hawks added a run in the fifth, and Hawks first baseman Chris Walsh homered in the seventh to give Monmouth a 6-0 lead. A&T did not mount a series threat after the fifth before Monmouth's seven-run ninth that included a three-run homer from Hunt.

Despite Sunday's loss, A&T went 3-2 during the week and remains in contention to reach the CAA tournament. This week, the Aggies will host the High Point University Panthers at The War on Tuesday, April 15, at 6 p.m. They will then hit the road for a three-game series against the Delaware Blue Hens, April 18-20.
