Women's Tennis Goes Undefeated in Orlando

The Aggies secure a thrilling 4-3 win over Saginaw Valley State.

ORLANDO, Fla. – The North Carolina A&T women's tennis team is undefeated thanks to winning a 4-3 thriller over Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Sandlando Park tennis courts.

The Aggies are 4-0 overall and finished their spring break trip to Orlando with a 3-0 mark before they travel to Clemson University to face the Tigers on Sunday, March 9 at 3:30 p.m.

Saginaw opened the match by winning the doubles point because the Aggies forfeited at No. 3 doubles. Junior El Sherif and sophomore Randy Rakotoarilala won at No. 2 doubles by defeating SVSU's Amelia Dickson and Lydia Liong 6-2. But the No. 1 doubles match went to the Cardinals. The Cardinals duo Adriana Barrio and Nicoletta Diamantopoulos beat Dorsa Cheraghi and Juana Gomez Weiss 6-2.

The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead when the Aggies forfeited at No. 6 singles, leaving SVSU two wins shy of clinching the match.

But the Aggies got on the board when Rakotoarilala defeated Dickson 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. The Aggies tied the match 2-2 when Gomez Weiss earned a 6-2, 6-2 win over Liong at No. 4 singles. The Aggies rally continued as Flavia Villegas contributed with a straight set, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Elizabeth Stuart.

Two three-set showdowns determined Wednesday's winner. First, El Sherif took on Diamantopoulos at No. 3 singles. El Sherif won the first set 6-4 before Diamantopoulos took the second set 6-4 before a fantastic tiebreaker set that saw Diamantopoulos squeeze out a 10-8 win. However, Cheraghi came through for A&T at No. 1 singles.

Cheraghi had a hard-fought win over Barrio. Barrio won the first set 6-1 before Cheraghi won the second 7-6, 7-4 in the tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker set, Cheraghi defeated Barrio 10-5 to secure the win for the Aggies. Cheraghi improved to 4-0 as the Aggies' No. 1 singles player.
