Women's Tennis Still Looks Impressive With Win Over Vulcans

Randy Rakotoarilala improved to 5-0 in singles.

ORLANDO, Fla. – North Carolina A&T women's tennis is off to one of its best starts in program history. The Aggies are 5-0 after a 5-1 win over California University of Pennsylvania Friday morning at the United States Tennis Association Oak Street campus.

The Aggies added a spring break match in Orlando this week to bring their total to four. The Aggies completed their Florida trip to the USTA National Campus undefeated. The match was cut short on Friday once the Aggies clinched the win. A&T is undefeated despite not having fielded a doubles team at No. 3 and a singles player at No. 6 all season.

Not having a No. 3 doubles team did not prevent the Aggies from taking the doubles point against California (Pa.).

That's partly because the A&T No. 2 doubles team of junior Hana El Sherif and sophomore Randy Rakotoarilala defeated the Vulcans team of Diletta Maria Mungo and Lilli Schreiber 6-1. Freshmen Dorsa Cheraghi and Juana Gomez Weiss complemented that win for the Aggies with a 6-4 win over Teddi Isherwood and Leandra Guldimann.

Gomez Weiss got A&T going in singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Schreiber at No. 4 singles. The Vulcans got a singles win when the Aggies forfeited at No. 6. El Sherif countered with a win at No. 3 singles. She defeated Mungo 6-2, 6-3. Freshman Flavia Villegas brought it home for A&T at No. 5 singles.

Villegas won the first set over Garance Laforet 6-3. Laforet beat her 7-6, 4-1 in the tiebreaker before Villegas clinched the individual win and team win with a 6-4 third-set win. Even though Villegas earned the clincher, Rakotoarilala finished her match at No. 2 singles, defeating Guldimann 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. It helped Rakotoarilala improve to 5-0 on the season.

Cheraghi did not complete her match at No. 1 singles. The Aggies will return to action on Sunday, March 9 at 3:30 p.m., when they face the Clemson Tigers at Clemson.
