DURHAM, NC – On a night when the North Carolina A&T Aggies sent six pitchers to the mound, most had trouble against the Duke Blue Devils bats. Duke used five home runs to defeat A&T 13-1 in non-conference action Tuesday evening at Jack Coombs Field.
A&T managed only three hits on Tuesday, but freshman Bruce Wyche did record an extra-base hit with a triple as the Aggies dropped to 3-7 on the season. Ben Miller went 2-for-4 for the Blue Devils with three RBIs to help Duke improve to 8-5.
Miller hit a two-run homer off A&T right-handed starter Jordan Bright (L, 0-1). It was a part of a three-run first against Bright as Wallace Clark also homered in the home half of the first. A&T got on the board in the third after Duke starter, LHP Andrew Healy (W, 1-1) left the game after pitching two innings, surrendering one hit and striking out three.
Junior Andrew Tinsley opened the third for A&T by singling up the middle. He moved to second on a wild pitch by RHP Gabe Nard. After Nard struck out junior Nick DiCarlo, a groundout from freshman Tyler Smith advanced Tinsley to third. Tinsley then scored on a Nard wild pitch to cut Duke's lead to 3-1.
The Blue Devils responded in a big way in their half of the third with eight runs. The inning's biggest swing came from AJ Garcia, who hit a three-run homer to give the Blue Devils an 11-1 lead. Duke also hit a homer run in the fourth off the bat of Tyler Albright and another in the seventh via the bat of Andrew Bell.
Senior RHP Diego Barrett did pitch a scoreless eight for A&T. The Aggies return to play on Friday, March 7 at 6 p.m., when they start a three-game series at Jacksonville University. Game 2 is Saturday at 6 p.m., and the series finale is Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
