SNOW HILL, NC – The North Carolina A&T men's golf team finished the three-day, three-round Cutter Creek Intercollegiate hosted by East Carolina University (ECU) by shooting a third-round 2-under 286 on the par 72, 7,280-yard Cutter Creek Golf Course on Sunday.
The Aggies finished the tournament in ninth place by shooting a three-round 16-over 880. Fellow Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) men's golf program Campbell won the tournament with a 22-under 842. ECU finished eight shots off the lead with a 14-under 850, followed by Harvard in the top three with a 3-over 867.
Freshman Pedro Pereira led the Aggies for the tournament, finishing 23rd by shooting a three-round 3-over 219 (76-71-72). Pereira moved up four spots from Saturday's play by shooting a third-round even-par 72. A&T's low man for the round was freshman Agib Hughes, who shot a third-round 3-under 69. His third-round card included five birdies.
Hughes moved from 82nd place to finish 66th after his magnificent third round. Hughes shot 14-over 230 (78-83-69) for the tournament. Freshman Javier Morgado placed 34th in the tournament by shooting a 5-over 221 (78-71-72). He shot an even-par 72 in the round while sophomore Camilo Marin carded four birdies on Sunday to finish with a 1-over 73 third round. Marin was the fourth Aggie to finish in the top 50, placing 46th with an 8-over 224 (76-75-73).
Sandhills Community College's William Mitchell won the individual crown with a 10-under 206. Campbell's Henric Bjelke and ECU's Holden Rucker finished in a second-place tie at 7-under 209. ECU's Philip Bondestad and Campbell's Benjamin Killingstad finished in a fourth-place tie at 6-under 210.
Hughes started his day on the par 4 10th with a par before going back-to-back birdies on holes 13 and 14. Hughes birdied the 434-yard par 4 13th to move to 1-under before going 2-under with a birdie on the 500-yard, par 4 14th. He lost a shot with a bogey on 14 before getting that shot back by carding a two on the par-3, 229-yard 17th.
After a par on the par 5 18th, he made the turn and bogeyed the par 4 first. Four straight pars followed before he went into the red numbers again with a birdie on the par 4, 341-yard sixth. He moved to 69 on his round after finishing his day with a three on the par 4, 462-yard ninth.
Pereira started his round on the back nine, starting the day with three straight pars before a bogey on No. 14. Three more pars and a birdie on the 575-yard 18th ended Pereria's back nine at even par. He started the front nine with a bogey before posting a two on his card on the par 5, 560-yard second.
Pereira stayed at even par over the four next four holes before a bogey on the par 4 seventh. His round moved back to even par with a birdie on the par 3 168-yard eighth. A par on No. 9 kept his round at 72.
After an eagle during his second round, Morgado had his first birdie on Sunday at the par 5, 546-yard 11th. He got to 3-under with a birdie on the 180-yard par 3 15th and the 459-yard par 4 16th. After a bogey on 18, Morgado went eight straight holes with carding pars. His double bogey on No. 9 put him back to even par for the round.
Marin started on the back nine on Sunday, shooting a 34 with four birdies and two bogeys. He had three bogeys on the front nine, shooting a 39. Senior Tyler Partee (72-83-76—231), freshman Ignacio Zapata (81-75-77—233) and senior JR Smith (80-87-77—244) also played for the Aggies during the tournament.
A&T is back in action at Appalachian State's Irish Creek Collegiate in Kannapolis, NC's Irish Creek Golf Course, April 7-8.
