Women's Tennis Wins Second Straight By Defeating Cavaliers

Randy Rakotoarilala won at doubles and singles on Wednesday.

MONTREAT, NC – The North Carolina A&T women's tennis team has recovered from its six-match losing streak and is now on a two-match winning streak after defeating the Montreat Cavaliers Wednesday afternoon at the Cornwall Tennis Center, 4-1.

The Aggies improved to 7-6 this season, following a rigid portion of the schedule that saw the Aggies play four matches in five days. The Aggies finished the difficult stretch with a win at Winston-Salem State University before traveling to Montreat and looking impressive in doubles.

A&T has struggled this season to win the doubles point because it has been unable to field a No. 3 doubles team. But it did not matter on Wednesday because the Cavaliers did not field one either. The Aggies won at No. 2 doubles with a team comprised of freshmen Juana Gomez Weiss and Flavia Villegas, defeating Clara Roman and Annika Rojas 6-1. The other doubles match on Wednesday had junior Hana El Sherif and sophomore Randy Rakotoarilala defeat Ainhoa Ordonez and Chiharu Ito 6-3. El Sherif and Rakotoarilala improved to 7-5 this season as a duo.

A&T started with a win at No. 4 singles with El Sherif beating Rojas, 6-2, 6-0. The Aggies took a 3-0 lead at No. 1 singles as Rakotoarilala improved to 7-6 this season with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Ordonez. Freshman Dorsa Cheraghi gave the Aggies the win, beating Roman 6-2, 6-4 win over Roma. Montreat's lone win came at No. 2 singles. Ito defeated Gomez Weiss in the first set, 6-1 before the two put on a terrific second set. Gomez Weiss saw her three-match winning streak end with a 7-6, 7-2 in the tiebreaker, loss to Ito.

A&T seeks its third straight win on Friday when the Aggies travel to Salisbury, Md., for a makeup match against the Livingstone Blue Bears. The two teams were supposed to play in their openers, but inclement weather postponed the contest.
