GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T received solid relief pitching Monday night at UNCG Baseball Stadium but could never get the bats going in a 7-0 loss to UNC Greensboro. UNCG completed its three-game sweep of the Aggies on Monday because Sunday's game got postponed because of inclement weather.
The Aggies did not give up an earned run after the fourth inning but managed only four hits against UNCG pitching as they endured their second shutout of the season. Freshman first baseman Tyler Smith had two of those hits.
Junior right-hander Gavin Sentell (L, 1-3) got the start for the Aggies and pitched a scoreless first after striking out the last two batters he faced in the frame. He followed that by striking out the first two batters he faced in the second before giving up a two-out double to Jacob Budzik.
Budzik's double led to an RBI single from Case Kermode to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. A groundout ended the inning, but the Spartans staged another two-out rally in the third. Parker Wright's two-out triple was followed by a hit by pitch and walk to load the bases. Budzik took advantage with a two-run single, giving UNCG a 3-0 advantage.
Senior Jacob Halford replaced Sentell in the fourth inning after Sentell gave up a one-out single. After Halford gave up a walk, a throwing error allowed a Spartan run to score before a wild pitch gave the Spartans a 5-0 advantage. The Aggies gave up two more unearned runs in the fifth.
Junior RHP Darius Robinson entered the game in the sixth inning and pitched a scoreless frame. Freshman RHP Braxton Davis retired the Spartans in order in the seventh before freshman RHP Jordan Bright gave up a walk in the eighth but left the inning without giving up a run.
UNCG started RHP Grant Aycock (W, 1-2). He had seven strikeouts, walked three, and gave up three hits over five innings.
A&T will have a quick turnaround because of the postponement and will face the Radford Highlanders at 6 p.m., Wednesday, March 19, from War Memorial Stadium. The Aggies will begin Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play with a three-game series against the William & Mary Tribe, starting on Friday at 6 p.m. from The War.
