NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The North Carolina A&T men's golf team completed the first round of the Surf Club Invitational at the par-71, 6,604-yard Surf Club golf course on Monday.
The Aggies finished the first round in a tie for 12th place with Purdue-Fort Wayne at 11-over 295. A&T is 16 shots off the lead behind leader UConn, who leads the tournament at 4-under 280. The Huskies are two shots ahead of Longwood, who shot a 2-under 282. Tournament host Appalachian State is third after shooting an even-par 284.
Freshman Javier Morgado led the Aggies on Monday by firing a 1-over 72 to finish in a 14-way tie for 24th, four shots behind the leaders Herman Huus of App State, Jack Urban of Radford, and Hunter Swidzinkski of Longwood. The trio shot a 3-under 68.
Morgado started on the par-4, 444-yard eighth hole. He parred the first two holes before birdieing the par-4, 462-yard 10th to move into red numbers. He bogeyed two of his next three holes to move to plus-1 before closing the back nine with five straight pars. Margado also opened the front nine with a birdie on No. 1.
He birdied the 432-yard par-4 second to move to even par before a double bogey derailed his momentum. Margado recovered to birdie the 516-yard par 5 fifth before posting pars on his final two holes of the day.
Sophomore Camilo Marin and freshman Pedro Pereira finished in an 11-way tie for 38th. Both men shot a 73 over 18 holes on Monday.
Marin started his day on the eighth with a bogey before finding his rhythm on the par 4, 324-yard 11th with a birdie. He also birdied 179-yard, par 3 13th, to move to 1-under. Unfortunately, he double-bogeyed the 14th. Six straight pars followed his double before a bogey on No. 3.
A birdie on No. 5, a bogey on No. 6, and a par on No. 7 concluded Marin's round. Meanwhile, Pereira was plus-3 over his three holes after starting on No. 10.
Pereira got going on the 357-yard par 4 14th with a birdie before a bogey on 16. Pereira caught fire from there, starting with a two on the par 3 205-yard 18th. He made the turn and carded another birdie on the 499-yard par 4 No. 1, getting him to 1-over the round.
After a bogey on No. 3, Pereira moved to even par with a birdie on the 391-yard par 4 4th and par 5 fifth. A double bogey on No. 8 ended Pereira's round at 2-over.
Freshman Agib Hughes' scores also went toward A&T's totals. He shot a 77 on Monday. The Aggies will continue play in the Surf Club Invitational, with the first Aggie teeing off at 9:30 a.m
