CHARLOTTE, NC – The North Carolina A&T women's tennis finally got to start its season on Friday and celebrated with a 6-0 win over Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) at the Coleman/Cuthbertson Tennis Courts.
The Aggies had their scheduled first match against Livingstone College postponed due to inclement weather. But Friday's weather was sunny, and the Aggies took over the match early against the Golden Bulls by securing the doubles point.
A&T's No. 2 doubles team of junior
Hana El Sherif and sophomore
Randy Rakotoarilala defeated Gilbert Simons and Auset Bligen 6-1. The Aggies clinched the doubles point as the No. 1 doubles team of freshman
Juana Gomez Weiss and
Dorsa Chergi defeated Shay'Tonya Missick and Manneni 6-4. Neither team fielded a No. 3 doubles team.
Freshman
Flavia Villegas got the Aggies going in singles competition. Villegas won at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-1 over Sanaa Hewitt. Gomez Weiss gave the Aggies a 3-0 lead with a win at No. 4 singles over Gilbert Simons.
El Sherif clinched the win for the Aggies at No. 3 singles. She defeated Bligen 6-2, 6-0. Rakotoarilala secured the No. 2 singles win for the Aggies with a 6-3, 6-1 win. Chergi completed the sweep with a win over Manneni, 4-6, 6-4 and 10-2 in the tiebreaker.
The Aggies will make up for lost time because they will play seven matches over Spring Break next week.
