A&T Losing Season-Opener to Power Four Texas Tech

D'Mya Tucker returns from missing the 2024-25 season and scores 13 points.

LUBBOCK, Texas — The North Carolina A&T women's basketball team faced Big 12/Power Four opponent Texas Tech for the first game of the 2025-26 season. The veteran-led Red Raiders kept consistent pressure on the Aggies throughout the full 40 minutes to earn a 78-40 victory.

Graduate guard D'Mya Tucker was the first to get her team on the board and the only A&T player to reach double figures with 13 points, going 5-for-6 from the free throw line and 4-for-16 from the field.

Conversely, Texas Tech had five players in double figures, four of whom were starters, including former CAA opponent Gemma Nuñez, who played for Campbell last season. Junior Jalynn Bristow led her team with 19 points and nine rebounds in 30 minutes of play.

Adversity struck early as A&T's impactful starting center, Chaniya Clark, picked up two fouls in the first 40 seconds of the game. The first sent Bristow to the line to hit the first two points of the game, while the second sent senior Bailey Maupin to the line for the next two points.

From there, the Red Raiders built on their lead due to full-court pressure that made it difficult for the Aggies to establish an offensive flow. They moved ahead 10-0 before Tucker found a gap in the press to attack the rim and draw a foul. She split the two free throws at the line.

A&T only scored four more points in that first quarter, and it was junior Paris Locke who put them in, making a spin move through traffic for a finish, and then hitting a pull-up jumper around the left elbow.

From there, the Red Raiders took command, building a 20-5 lead and maintaining that cushion throughout. They forced the Aggies into 22 turnovers, earning 21 points off them. They also held A&T to just two assists, both of which came in the second half.

Clark returned in the second quarter, where she picked up another foul but stayed clean the rest of the game as she grabbed 10 rebounds and came close to a double-double with nine points.

Head Coach Tarrell Robinson has a youthful bench, all of whom are underclassmen, which he relied on early as the fouls and fatigue began to take their toll. Freshman Anaya Karriem made her collegiate debut in place of Clark in the first quarter and earned her first two points while contributing 16 minutes to the game.

The Aggies will stay in Texas to face 17th-ranked Texas Christian University on Thursday at 5 p.m. in Fort Worth.
