Davidson Uses Early Second Half Run to Defeat A&T

A&T has shot better than 50 percent from the floor in their last three games.

DAVIDSON, NC – Davidson had two key moments in Friday night's non-conference men's basketball game at John M. Belk Arena that the North Carolina A&T Aggies could not overcome.

The Wildcats hit a buzzer-beater 3-pointer to end the first half and went on an 11-0 run to start the second half, leading to a 90-74 win over the Aggies on Friday evening. Other than that, the Aggies can take away that they shot 51 percent from the field against an Atlantic-10 opponent, including 54 percent in the first half. Redshirt freshman Lewis Walker continued to play well, scoring 22 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the field. He continued to have the hot hand from the free throw line, shooting 6-for-6 from there on Friday, and he is shooting 91 percent for the season.

The loss snapped A&T's three-game winning streak as they fell to 3-2 on the season. Davidson shot 56 percent from the floor, improving to 6-1 behind 21 points, eight rebounds and three assists from Page High School graduate and Greensboro, NC native Josh Scovens.

While the Aggies used their nine-day layoff from competition to return several players to the lineup, including 6-foot-5 guard Dwayne Pierce, 6-8 forward Zamoku Weluche-Ume and 6-9 forward KJ Debrick. The Aggies were still without leading scorer Lureon Walker for the second straight game, and the Aggies kept standout center Will Felton on minutes restrictions as they continue to get him prepared for Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) conference play.

"We have to do what's best for them as opposed to what's best for us," said A&T head Monté Ross about Lureon Walker and Felton. "I don't want to be selfish. It's not easy, but I've been in this business a long time, and you have to do what is best for the long term. We want them to have the best possible experience and make sure we protect them, so we're going to do what's best for them. But obviously, we are going to be better when both are at full strength."

Despite not having Lureon Walker and Felton only playing two minutes, the Aggies got off to a good start. Five minutes into the game, Lewis Walker came flying in from the baseline for a putback to tie the game at 12-12. Four minutes later, freshman Brooklyn Vick pulled up for a jump shot on the break to bring the Aggies to within one at 21-20.

With six minutes remaining in the first half, Lewis Walker tied the game at 29-29 with a 3-pointer. Thirty seconds later, Pierce gave the Aggies the lead with a transition three. However, Davidson outscored the Aggies 15-4 over the next 3 ½ minutes to take a 44-36 lead with two minutes to play in the first half. Felton entered the game and put back a miss by Mujahiid Burton to bring the Aggies to within six with 32 seconds remaining in the first half.

The Aggies appeared to have a big stop to end the half, but they Aggies were not able to corral the miss, knocking the ball out of bounds to give the Wildcats a second chance to score before the half. They took advantage of it, as Roberts Blums netted a three to give Davidson a 47-38 halftime lead.

"That shot at the end of the half was big because we were not able to secure the rebound, and that gave them another opportunity," said Ross. "Still, if we had guarded better, that would have prevented them from making the shot."

Davidson used the momentum from that shot to score the first eight points of the second half, completing an 11-0 run that didn't end until a Pierce jump shot cut the Wildcats lead to 55-40 2 ½ minutes into the second half.

A&T did cut the lead to 12, 67-55, on a Debrick 3-pointer with 12 minutes to play, but Davidson outscoured A&T 11-4 over the next four minutes to take a 19-point lead. The Aggies never got any closer than 14 the rest of the way.

"They put us in some difficult situations out there," said Ross. "There were some points in the game where we weren't able to get stops, so that allowed them to get some separation. But I'm proud of the way we shot the ball. That means we are taking good shots and sharing the basketball. If we continue to do that, we are going to get better results."

The Aggies return to the 704-area code on Tuesday, December 2, when they face the Charlotte 49ers in a 7 p.m. game at Halton Arena.
