NORTH CAROLINA A&T AGGIES STORYLINES

  • A&T will try to move to .500 in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) when it faces its second in-state rival of the season in the Campbell Fighting Camels.
  • The Aggies had last week off after losing their third straight game by seven points or less. They trailed by 16 points before losing to Maine by seven. They were ahead by 13 before losing to William & Mary by four, and they led 9-0 over South Carolina State University (SCSU) at halftime before losing 22-16.
  • There have been two culprits behind the tough losses –surrendering big plays and late turnovers.
  • A&T did better in the category of giving up big plays two weeks ago against SCSU, but two fourth-quarter fumbles aided the Bulldogs in their come-from-behind win over A&T. Three weeks ago at William & Mary, two turnovers led to 10 Tribe points in the Tribe's 38-34 win.
  • Against the Camels, the Aggies will need to be extra careful, as the Camels are one of the best teams in Division I-FCS football at turning teams over. They rank second in the CAA and 11th nationally in turnovers gained.
  • On the flip side, the Aggies defense could also benefit from the Camels' generosity, as Campbell has turned the ball over 11 times this season.
  • Redshirt sophomore quarterback Kevin White is expected to make his fifth straight start for the Aggies. It will be his eighth career start as he continues to gain experience amid a quarterback room that is still banged up a bit.
  • A&T's quarterback situation made a remarkable turnaround after the Aggies were forced to play six quarterbacks over the first four weeks of the season because of injury. White has thrown for 930 yards, completed 60 percent (66-110) of his passes, and has thrown for five touchdowns and only two interceptions.
  • White has also rushed for two touchdowns but has been sacked 17 times in four games.
  • A&T's special teams have been one of the special things about A&T this season, starting with graduate kicker Andrew Brown. Two weeks ago, Brown was named CAA co-Special Teams Player of the Week after he booted a 55-yard field goal against SCSU to break the program record for longest field goal made.
  • In addition, his 33-yard field goal as time expired in the first half against SCSU broke the program record for most field goals made in a career with 43. His next field goal attempt will break the program record for most field goals attempted.
  • Brown is the only kicker in program history with more than two made 50-plus yard field goals in a career. His 55-yarder two weeks ago marked the third 50-yarder of his career. This season, he is 7-for-9 in kicking field goals.
  • The Aggies have given up only one kickoff return for a touchdown and have not surrendered a punt return for a touchdown. Meanwhile, Elijah Kennedy leads the conference in yards per punt return (14.8).
  • First-year head coach Shawn Gibbs leads the Aggies. He spent 11 seasons (2011-21) as an assistant at A&T. During that time, the Aggies won five conference championships, four Celebration Bowl games, and four Black College National Championships.

SCOUTING CAMPBELL

  • North Carolina A&T and Campbell have something in common. They are both coming off homecoming losses. A&T's occurred two weeks ago, before its bye week, while Campbell lost its homecoming game 24-10 to the University of New Hampshire (UNH) last week.
  • The Fighting Camels led 10-9 going into the fourth quarter thanks to a 9-yard touchdown run from JJ Cowan. But New Hampshire's Matt Vezza put the game away with a 6-yard touchdown run to give the Wildcats a two-touchdown lead with 1:48 remaining in the game.
  • Braxton Harris leads Campbell on the field each week as its head coach. Harris started at Campbell in 2021 as its linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator before adding assistant head coach to his title the following season. He then took over at Houston Christian as its head coach in 2023 before returning to Campbell in 2024 to take over its head coaching position.
  • Harris went 3-9 in his first season at Campbell in 2024, with his only win in league coming at the expense of A&T, a 21-7 win in Buies Creek, NC.
  • The Campbell offense has struggled at times this season, ranking ninth in the conference and 87th in FCS football. Quarterbacks Kamden Sixkiller and Mike Chandler II led the Camels offense over its first seven games, completing 59.5 percent (132-222) of his passes for 1,237 yards, nine touchdowns, and three interceptions.
  • Sixkiller did not play against UNH. Instead, the start went to graduate QB Mike Chandler II. Chandler II completed 8 of 11 passes for 133 yards. He also ran for 28 yards on 11 carries. Despite the quarterback, Randall King is the favorite target, making 28 receptions for 333 yards and five touchdowns.
  • Cowan leads the rushing attack with 407 yards and six touchdowns on 80 carries. Cowan averages 5.1 yards per carry. Two other backs typically see playing time, including Ethan Lawrence and Naieem Kearney.
  • Seven different Camels have recovered fumbles, six different players have forced fumbles, and six players have interceptions. DeVonyae Pettis is the best pass rusher with six tackles for loss and 3 1/2 sacks. Defensive back Brandon Guzman was a preseason All-CAA selection. He has 28 tackles, four pass breakups, and he has blocked a kick this season. Jojo Pace is the leading tackler, making 6.5 stops per game.

THE SERIES

  • Campbell leads the all-time series, 2-1. The two teams played their first game on October 29, 2022. A&T rallied from 18 down to beat the Camels 45-38 over the Aggies.
  • Both teams were in the Big South Conference at the time. In the two years both teams have been members of the CAA, the Camels have won both matchups, 28-14 in 2023 and 21-7 in 2024.
  • Saturday will mark their third matchup at A&T. Each team has won one game.
