COLUMBIA, SC – On Saturday, the North Carolina A&T men's and women's indoor track and field teams owned the 60-meter hurdles, claiming double wins in the University of South Carolina's Gamecock Opener at the Carolina Indoor Track and Field Complex.
Junior Jason Holmes and senior Lucheyona Weaver captured two of the Aggies' five combined wins by championing the 60H events, and Holmes took another victory in the men's 200m.
Coming off two first-place finishes at the Clemson Opener, Holmes marked back-to-back wins in the 60H and the 200m with times of 7.94 and 21.01 on Saturday. After his season debut, Holmes was honored as the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) indoor men's track athlete of the week. After Saturday's run, he remains at the top of the NCAA Division I list in the 60H and is ranked No. 2 in the 200m.
In her first run of the season, Weaver secured the first-place finish on the women's side by running an 8.20 in the 60H. Weaver has held the women's CAA Indoor Track and Field Championship title in the 60H for the last two years, and her debut run this weekend currently puts her at No. 5 in the country.
Sophomore Jordan Ware clocked in right behind Holmes in the men's 200m with a time of 21.02, which now sits at the No. 6 spot in the nation. Junior Thomas Smith IV and sophomore Isaiah Taylor took two of the other top five spots in 60H, with Smith placing third in 7.79 and Taylor finishing fourth in 7.88.
The other wins of the day came from the women's field events. Graduate student Julieth Nwosu won the women's shot put event with a toss of 52 feet, 4 inches, and junior Olivia Dowd championed the women's triple jump with a leap of 39 feet, ¼ inch.
The men ran three teams in the 4x400 relay to close the meet. Senior Caleb Jackson, sophomore Xzaviah Taylor, Ware, and sophomore Caleb Gurnell placed second (3:09.63); freshman Elijah Thomas, senior Michael Brittingham, sophomore Nakhi Benjamin, and graduate student Brandon Nya placed third (3:14.19); and sophomore Edwin Hall, junior Dawson Grogan, and sophomore Kaleb Conway placed fifth (3:21.24).
Next week the Aggies will make their way down to Texas for the 2025 Corky Classic, which is scheduled for January 17-18 in the Sports Performance Center at Texas Tech University.
