GREENSBORO – The North Carolina A&T volleyball team is off to a 7-3 start overall and 2-0 in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA), and freshman Tyne Ross has benefited mightily. On Monday, the CAA named Ross rookie of the week for the third time this season after the Aggies won twice this past weekend in Hampton, Va., over the Hampton Pirates.
Ross won her third rookie of the week honor this season.
"Congratulations to Tyne for an outstanding weekend of play to open CAA play," A&T head coach Hal Clifton said. "Tyne continues to work hard to improve her game in the gym. She wants to be a complete player."
The Aggies started their weekend with a three-set win over the Pirates at Holland Hall on Friday night. Ross finished with 15 kills, nine digs, and two service aces. She only had two attack errors in 30 attempts to post a .433 hitting percentage. On Saturday, she followed her Friday performance with even more accuracy.
Ross recorded 14 kills and only two attack errors on 26 attempts for a .462 hitting percentage in the Aggies three-set win over Hampton. She also had three aces, two blocks, and three digs. For the week, Ross averaged 4.83 kills, 2.0 digs, 0.83 aces, and 5.83 points per set while hitting .446.
She also received 20 services without making a reception error. Ross leads the CAA in kills per set (4.64), attacks per set (11.33), and points per set (5.11). Nationally, she ranks ninth in kills per set. After the weekend, the Aggies improved to 7-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play. They will face the Northeastern Huskies on Friday and Saturday in Greensboro.
Friday's match starts at 3 p.m., and Saturday's contest is at noon. It will be A&T's first home match in almost a month and their first match inside Moore Gymnasium this season.
"Tyne is happy for her teammates, and she knows this is a true team sport," Clifton said. "I think that is what makes Tyne who she is. She is as excited when a teammate gets a kill or a block if not more excited."
