Davidson Beats A&T In Home-Run Filled Game

The two teams combined for eight home runs on Tuesday.

DAVIDSON, NC — North Carolina A&T baseball has scored an incredible amount of runs lately. On Tuesday at Wilson Field, during a midweek game against the Davidson Wildcats, the Aggies posted double-figure runs for the second straight game but could not overcome six Wildcat home runs in a 16-11 loss.

The Aggies, who have recorded 41 runs in their last five games, dropped to 21-19 on the season. Eli Putnam had two of Davidson's home runs as the Wildcats improved to 17-22. A&T had two home runs to add to the eight home runs that left the park on Tuesday.

After TJ Ash recorded an RBI single in the visitor's first inning, the Wildcats received home runs from Jacob Friend and Putnam off A&T right-handed Brock Duff (L, 1-2). The Aggies recaptured the lead in the second off Davidson's right-handed starter, Thomas Whelan (W, 2-0). Senior Camden Jackson, who went 4-for-5 Tuesday night with two RBIs and a run scored, opened the inning with a single.

Jackson stole second, and the Aggies put runners on the corners with one out when freshman Ellis Reid walked. Jackson advanced to third on a wild pitch. A throwing error allowed Jackson to score, and Reid came home on a groundout by senior infielder Devon Rodriguez to give the Aggies a 3-2 advantage going into the Davidson second.

But the Wildcats had a big opening to their second, opening with a double, a single, and a hit by pitch before Noah Jouras hit a two-run single to give the Wildcats a 4-3 lead. The Wildcats never relinquished the lead again as Friend reloaded the bases with a single, leading to the Aggies making a pitching change.

Senior RHP Avery Cain entered the game and struck out Putnam. Cider Canon followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to right field to give Davidson a two-run lead before Jake Wilhoit hit a two-run single to put Davidson ahead 7-3.

Junior catcher Canyon Brown homered in the third to bring the Aggies to within three before a four-run Davidson third, which included an RBI double for Jouras and a three-run homer from Putnam, increased Davidson's lead to 11-4. Despite Davidson's offensive exploits, the Aggies refused to go away. A two-out rally, aided by a Davidson error in the A&T fourth, helped the Aggies score three runs.

After junior infielder Enrique Wood reached on an error with one out, Reid recorded the second out by flying out to right. But Rodriguez singled, and graduate first baseman Tatsunori Negishi hit his fifth home run of the season, a three-run shot over the right-field wall, cutting the deficit to four runs at 11-7.

The rally kept going against RHP Brycen Champey. Champey walked senior infielder Tre Williams and Brown to put Aggies on first and second. Davidson replaced Champey with RHP Jake Dunagan. Ash singled off Dunagan to bring Williams home, cutting Davidson's lead to 11-8. The inning finally ended with a Chet Sikes strikeout. But the Aggies never got any closer.

Davidson hit a solo home run in the home fourth. The Wildcats hit two home runs in the fifth as Jouras hit a solo shot, followed by a two-run homer from Canon to put the Wildcats ahead by seven, 15-8. Davidson added an unearned run in the sixth to increase its lead to eight.

A bases-loaded walk gave the Aggies another run in the seventh. A&T got to within five runs in the visitor's eighth off LHP Jed Howard. He hit the first two batters he faced in the eighth with pitches before a Sikes groundout helped both runners move into scoring position. Jackson followed with a two-run double to cut the Davidson lead to 16-11.

RHP Adam Katz entered the game and retired the first two batters he faced to end the inning. The Aggies prevented Davidson from increasing its lead as Williams pitched A&T out of a jam in the home eighth. LHP Matt Weber entered the game in the ninth for the Wildcats and retired the Aggies in order, ending the game.

Brown went 2-for-2 and scored twice for A&T, while Ash posted a 2-for-4 night with two RBIs and a run scored. The Aggies return to Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) action on Friday when they open a three-game series at Hofstra starting at 2 p.m. from University Field.
