GREENSBORO – Junior catcher
Canyon Brown had a historic night for the North Carolina A&T baseball program and senior right-handed starting pitcher
Coley Kilpatrick (W, 2-0) had another outstanding outing to lead the Aggies to a 14-5 win over the George Mason Patriots Friday night at War Memorial Stadium.
Brown had a career-high eight RBIs, which included a grand slam home run and a 3-for-3 night with a run scored. Junior third baseman
AJ Jones drove in three runs and had two hits. Senior outfielder
Michael Logan posted two RBIs, two hits and scored thrice. Junior second baseman did the same, scoring three times and producing two hits.
Meanwhile, on the mound, Kilpatrick went seven innings, surrendering three hits, three walks, two runs and striking out six. Kilpatrick's run support started early after George Mason starter Nick Martins (L, 1-3) hit Logan with a pitch and surrendered a double to graduate first baseman
Tatsunori Negishi in the first inning. With runners in scoring position, Brown came through with his first RBI, an infield single that scored Logan.
The Patriots answered with two runs in the visitor's first before the Aggies produced their first big inning of the evening. After junior outfielder
Shemar Dalton scored on an error in left field, the Patriots decided to intentionally walk Negishi. Brown made them pay, ripping a two-run single off Martins to give the Aggies a 4-2 lead. Negishi went to third on the play and eventually scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by Jones.
Kilpatrick rolled from there, allowing only two base runners between the third and sixth innings. Both of those runners were eliminated by double plays. In the meantime, Jones had a two-run single in the fourth and Brown hit his grand slam to right center, oddly enough after another intentional walk to Negishi. A&T added three more runs in the sixth inning to take a 14-2 lead.
George Mason did score three runs in the visitor's eighth as Jordan Smith hit a three-run homer off A&T reliever and RHP
Isaiah Brewington. Graduate RHP
Avery Cain entered the game after Smith's home run and retired five straight Patriots, striking out two of them to secure the win for A&T.
The Aggies improved to 12-5 overall as the offensive accolades came in droves. Dalton went 2-for-4 and scored four times to further his streak of reaching base safely to 13. Dalton also has a six-game hitting streak going. Unfortunately, junior shortstop
Enrique Wood saw his 10-game hitting streak end as he went 0-for-3. He did reach base safely on two walks and scored once to keep increase his streak of reaching base safely to 10 games.
George Mason dropped to 9-8 overall. The two teams continue the series on Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. at War Memorial Stadium.
