BROWN SUMMIT – North Carolina A&T men's golf hosted its annual Aggie Invitational, presented by Grant Thornton on Monday on the par-72, 7,274-yard Bryan Park Golf course. The nine teams participating played two rounds and 36 holes on the first day, with the Aggies finishing fourth by firing off a 32-over 608.
UNC Greensboro had three golfers compete as individuals. Elon's B team leads the tournament with a 2-under 574, followed by Prairie View A&M at 25-over 601. Alabama State rounds out the top-3 after shooting 26-over 602.
The lowest score on the day for A&T came from graduate Diego Gonzalez, who ended Monday's play tied for 11th as he shot a 5-over 149. Gonzalez shot even par in the second round, including an eagle on the par-5, 543-yard 11th.
Elon's Landon Durham leads the tournament with a 4-under 140. He holds a two-shot lead over UNCG's Noah Connor, who shot a 2-under 142. Elon's Jennings Glenn is third (1-under, 143), and Prairie View A&M's Rondarius Walters is fourth (1-over, 145). There is a four-way tie for fifth.
After his Eagle on 11, Gonzalez bogeyed the par-5 15 and the par-4 17 before carding a birdie on the 469-yard, par-4, 18th to move to 1-under for the round. After that, he parred four straight holes before carding a five on the par-4 fifth. Over two rounds, Gonzalez scored on two birdies and an eagle.
Samuel Drew Walker finished in a four-way tie for 24th on Monday after shooting a 10-over 154. His best round was the second, as he turned in a 3-over 75 score. Walker walked to the par-3, 176-yard seventh at even par.
He posted a birdie on the hole before moving back to even par with a bogey on the par-4 ninth. He moved back to 1-under for his round with a birdie on the par-11, 543-yard fifth. After three more bogeys, he closed out his round with six straight pars.
Conrado Chozas also shot a 75 in the second round. He finished at 11-over 155 in 28th place. Chozas had two birdies on Monday. Martin Gutierrez and JR Smith also placed for A&T. Gutierrez finished with an 18-over 182, and Smith ended the day at 22-over 166 after shooting a first-round 79.
The teams are back in action Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.
