MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The North Carolina A&T men's golf completed its play in the Bash at the Beach tournament hosted by Appalachian State at the par-71, 6,705-yard The Surf Golf and Beach Club golf course on Tuesday. The Aggies placed 16th in the two-day, three-round event by shooting a 55-over, 907.
Oral Roberts won the event by shooting a 9-under 843. UConn finished second, six strokes behind, with a 3-under 849. App State (856) and Long Island University (859) finished third and fourth, respectively, and Delaware and Utah Valley tied for fifth by shooting 862.
Junior Martin Gutierrez had the low score for the Aggies over A&T's two-day stay in Myrtle Beach by finishing in a five-way tie for 53rd with a 10-over 223. He had a fantastic third round by shooting a 1-over 72 to ascend 22 spots from placing 75th after the first two rounds on Monday.
Gutierrez's day didn't start glorious as he double-bogeyed the par-4, 471-yard 10th. But he composed himself by paring the next two holes before recording his first birdie on the 186-yard, par-3 13th. He ran into trouble on the 16th and 17th, carding bogeys before making the turn and birdieing the par-5 No. 1 to move to 2-over on the day. He scored again on the 413-yard, par-4 4th to go to 1-over. He parred the final five holes he played on the day to finish 10-over for the tournament.
Freshman Samuel Drew Walker had the low score for the Aggies over the two rounds. But he carded only one birdie on Tuesday to finish in a five-way tie for 63rd with a 12-over 225, dropping 18 spots from his finish on Monday. He shot a 7-over 78 in the third round.
Graduate Diego Gonzalez and freshman Conrado Chozas tied Gutierrez for most birdies in the third round with three. Chozas shot a 77 in the third round, and Gonzalez posted an 88. Freshman Carson Witherspoon shot even par on the front nine to shoot a 78 on Tuesday. Chozas, Gonzalez and Witherspoon shot 232 for the tournament to finish in a five-way tie for 88th.
The Aggies will host the Aggie Invitational, presented by Grant Thornton, March 27-28 at Bryan Park.
