A&T Loses to Davidson In Mid-Week Contest

The Aggies lose their first game of the season.

DAVIDSON, NC –  North Carolina A&T ran into two difficult innings, the sixth and seventh, on Tuesday night in a 15-1 loss in non-conference baseball at Wilson Field. The Aggies lost their first game of the season and dropped to 3-1. Davidson, meanwhile, evened its record at 2-2 with the win.

A&T did scratch out six singles, led by junior Anthony Hennings, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI. He improved to 9-for-17 (.529) at the plate after the Aggies first four games. The Wildcats had 16 hits, including six extra base hits.

The Aggies lone run came in the visitor's third, giving them a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Shemar Dalton led off the frame by getting plunked with an 0-1 pitch from Davidson's left-handed starter Isaac Fix. Dalton later moved to third on an error before Hennings' two-out infield single scored Dalton.

The Wildcats scored three runs in their half of the third to take the lead for good as they received an RBI double from Michael Carico, an RBI single from Nick Calero and an RBI sacrifice fly from Ryan Wilson. Davidson then blew the game open with a six-run sixth. They took advantage of four walks and a two-run single from Tyler Douglas as they came away with a 9-1 lead after the frame was over.

Another six-run inning followed for the Wildcats, this one in the seventh, as a three-run homer from Wilson served as the devasting blow. Wilson went 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored. Douglas was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI.

Fix (1-0) got credit for the win. Coley Kilpatrick (0-1) lost despite having a quality start. He pitched five innings, gave up two earned runs, did not walk a batter and recorded six strikeouts. The Aggies will start a three-game series with Appalachian State on Friday as the two teams plan to play in a different ballpark for each game, beginning with a visit to Truist Point, home of the minor league baseball team, the High Point Rockers.

Game 2 is scheduled for Smith Stadium in Boone, N.C., before the series concludes with a Sunday game at A&T's War Memorial Stadium.
