Softball Sees Season Come to an End

Aggies lose two to Radford in doubleheader.

RADFORD, Va. – North Carolina A&T finished the season Sunday afternoon in a Big South Conference softball doubleheader as Radford won 8-0 in five innings and 12-3 in six innings at RU Softball Stadium.

A&T closes the season at 13-35 overall and 3-21 in the Big South. Radford improved to 19-27 and 12-15.

The Highlanders scored three runs in their first inning, starting with an RBI single from Cassi Barbato. Barbato moved to second, and Rachel Smith, who reached on a walk, advanced to third on a Jordan Moss groundout.

Barbato and Smith then scored on a throwing error to give Radford a 3-0 advantage after one inning played.

The Highlanders scored two more runs in the second after Hannah Morris hit a home run to right field and Barbato hit an infield RBI single.

Radford added another run when an Emily Smith steal attempt of third turned into a throwing error by A&T in the third. Then, in the fourth, Rachel Smith took the first pitch she saw and launched it over the right field fence for a 7-0 Radford lead.

The Highlanders run-ruled the Aggies in the fifth as Lindsay Hunter opened the inning with a single. Emily Smith then advanced pinch-runner Hannah Poole to second on a sac bunt. But a throwing error after the recorded out allowed Poole to give Radford an eight-run lead after five.

Sophomore Kiara Richards led the Aggies at the plate, going 2-for-2. Graduate Jazzmaine Hammond went 1-for-2. Freshman Mariah Headen (2-7) took the loss in the circle. Freshman Joey Barkhimer pitched the final three innings giving up one earned run with five hits.

Game 2 saw the Aggies get on the board quickly. Freshman Dezianna Patmon hit a two-out infield single in the Aggies first to start the rally. Richards followed with a double down the left field line, and sophomore Alyxx Estrada loaded the bases with a walk.

Senior Jocelyn Bennett picked up an RBI as Radford starter Emily Spingarn hit her with a 1-0 pitch to score Patmon. A Kayla Taylor strikeout stranded three, however.

Radford answered with two runs in the first as Cori McMillan scored on a bases-loaded walk and Rachel Smith scored on a groundout.

The Highlanders then took a big lead with a six-run second that included a two-run home run from Poole. Radford took a 9-1 lead into the fourth after Abby Wilson hit an RBI single in the Radford third.

In the fourth, the Aggies added a run as Bennett opened the frame by walking on four pitches before junior Latianna Langley replaced her as a pinch runner. Then, freshman Amaya Kearse recorded a one-out infield single, moving Langley to third.

Senior Eternal Fuller followed with a bunt single to the catcher to load the bases. Hammond scored Langley on an RBI sac fly to cut Radford's lead to 9-2. Fuller, however, was thrown out between first and second base for the final out of the inning.

A&T added another run in the fifth as Richards earned a two-out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. The events set up Estrada's RBI single through the right side to get the Aggies to within six at 9-3.

Bennett kept the rallying going with a single up the middle, followed with a single up the middle, but a Taylor groundout ended the threat.

Radford scored a run in the fifth on a Wilson RBI and put the game away in the sixth on a two-run homer by Poole, her second of the game as the Highlanders run-ruled the Aggies in Game 2.

Kearse and Fuller went 2-for-3. Sophomore S'Nyiah Stinson (2-11) picked up the loss. Kearse pitched the final four innings, giving up five runs with eight hits.
