EAST GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T was swept by the Big South Conference softball leader, the USC Upstate Spartans, after an 11-0 win in a five-inning no-hitter Sunday afternoon at the Lady Aggies Softball Complex.
A&T dropped to 12-25 overall and 2-13 in league play. The Spartans are 39-3 and 13-2.
Sophomore S'Nyiah Stinson (2-8) picked up the loss, pitching 1.1 innings and giving up five runs on one hit.
After scoring a run in the first, the Spartans had a big second inning. Celeste Delorenzo, Sarah Price and Summer Johnson recorded RBI during the frame to help Upstate post five runs and take a 6-0 lead. Upstate also scored on a wild pitch and an error during the inning.
The Spartans added five runs in the fifth as well. The big blow in the inning came from Johnson, who hit a two-run RBI double to left center field for the Spartans 10th and 11th runs. Madison Lanoux, Denver Lauer and Price also had RBI during the inning, with Price hitting an RBI double.
Freshman Dezianna Patmon walked with two outs in the fourth inning for A&T's first base runner of the game. Then, freshman Jailyn Tineo walked with one out in the fifth inning. But the game ended on a strike-her out, throw-her out double play as senior Jocelyn Bennett fanned and junior pinch runner Latianna Langley was caught stealing.
A&T will not return home until Saturday, April 30, when they begin a three-game series against Presbyterian with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
