DAVIDSON – On Wednesday evening inside Wilson Field, the North Carolina A&T baseball team suffered a midweek setback at the hands of the Davidson Wildcats, 3-0.
On Wednesday, Freshman Jackson Hull (L, 0-1) got his first collegiate start on the mound for A&T (3-6).
Davidson (7-1) broke the scoring open in the home second. Jacob Hinderleider drew a one-out walk to put a man on first. After he advanced to second on a wild pitch, Parker Nolan drew another walk. Michael Carico then knocked a two-out single up the middle to score Hinderleider from second and put the Wildcats up 1-0.
Trevor Candelaria followed with a two-RBI single before sophomore Isaiah Brewington relieved Hull on the mound. He walked Jake Wilhoit to load the bases but got the inning-ending strikeout to get out of the jam.
The game went scoreless the rest of the way, with both pitching staffs flexing their depth. A&T's relievers combined for a scoreless 6.1 innings of work, allowing just four hits and accruing nine strikeouts. Brewington was able to turn in the best line of his young career, turning in 2.1 innings of hitless work with a career-high five strikeouts.
Freshman Michael Crayton relieved him and pitched a clean inning, allowing one hit and earning a strikeout. Next, redshirt freshman left-hander Stirling Thomas threw two-thirds of an inning and fanned one. Finally, junior righty Jeremiah Foster recorded the last out of the game with a groundout.
The Wildcats got great pitching from their side, throwing a combined three-hitter. Will Schomberg turned in the best line of the four Davidson pitchers, going 4.0 innings, allowing one hit and striking out eight.
Offensively A&T could not get any runners on to get into a flow. Sophomores Alex Reyna and Xavier Bussey each went 1-for-4 on the day. In the eighth, Reyna had his second hit stolen from him on a great diving play from Wildcat centerfielder Parker Nolan. Junior Anthony Hennings collected the other hit for the Aggies.
