NORTH CAROLINA A&T AGGIES (11-18, 6-9 Big South): The Aggies are coming off a midweek loss to crosstown rival, High Point University, 78-58. HPU outrebounded A&T 39-23, and the Aggies shot just 41 percent from the free throw line.
The Aggies have one more regular-season game remaining before playing in their first-ever Big South Conference Basketball Tournament next week. The Aggies will play their first game on Wednesday, March 2, at the Bojangles' Coliseum in Charlotte. Their seeding will determine their start time and opponent.
The Aggies have not had luck in conference tournament play the past two seasons. In 2020, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) suspended its tournament as the COVID-19 pandemic began to sweep through the world. A year later, the MEAC prevented the Aggies from playing in the tournament based on a false positive COVID test from a staff member.
This season, the Aggies are just 3-13 on the road, but one of those wins came at Radford in January. Redshirt sophomore forward Marcus Watson led the team with 18 points and nine rebounds in that game.
Head coach Will Jones is in his third season overall and second full season after initially taking over on an interim basis on December 24, 2019. In that same year, Jones earned MEAC coach of the year honors and sports a 36-33 (.522) overall record.
RADFORD (10-17, 6-9 Big South): The Highlanders had won three-straight games over Hampton, Campbell and HPU before dropping their most recent contest to Longwood, 71-66, on Wednesday.
While they are 8-4 at home, Radford is just 2-12 on the road.
Junior forward Rashun Williams leads the team offensively with his 9.7 points per game. However, the Highlanders average a Big South-worst 62.9 points per game as a team. Their assist-to-turnover ratio is also at the bottom of the league at 0.8. In addition, Radford has a 0.0 rebounding margin through their first 27 games, as they average 32.5 rebounds per game.
As the Big South Tournament and postseason play approaches, first-year head coach Darris Nichols has a lot of experience with this time of year as both an assistant and a player. He assisted at Florida for six seasons, where the Gators made four NCAA tournament appearances, including the Elite Eight in 2017. Nichols also had three postseason berths (2005 Elite Eight, 2006 & 2008 Sweet 16) as a four-year letterwinner at West Virginia. In his inaugural season, he has a 10-17 record with the Highlanders.
THE SERIES: Wednesday will be the 12th time the two schools have faced off. Radford leads the all-time series 8-3.
QUOTABLE: "We have to want it more, and that has to come from the player's side of it – leadership, seniors, graduate players – we have to want it more in the locker room, and I think at the end of the day, I have to give them that energy and enthusiasm and put them in position to go out there and get excited and be ready to compete."
