ELON, N.C. – North Carolina A&T men's tennis player
Esteban Lopez won his singles match, but the Aggies fell to Elon 6-1 Tuesday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
Lopez defeated Nicholas Campbell in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 1 singles position to cut the lead to 5-1. In two matches this season, Lopez is 2-0 at No. 1 singles.
"I played pretty well in my match," Lopez said. "It was a tough match, but I played steady and solid the whole match. I have to keep working hard. The season is long. It was a good match and a good win."
Elon started by winning the doubles point by winning all three matches. Kyle Frankel and Camilo Ponce defeated Jorge Perez and
Eder Blanco 6-1 at the No. 2 doubles, while Chung-Han Tsai and Daniel Martin defeated Lopez and
Vasil Ivanov 6-3 at No. 1 to clinch the doubles point.
Luke Queiroz and Ben Zipay defeated Ian Pederson and
Ethan Baly 7-6 (6) at the No. 3.
Elon took a 2-0 lead when Tsai defeated Pederson 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 singles. Playing in his first collegiate singles match, Baly lost to Esteban Penagos 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4.
The Phoenix clinched the match at No. 4 singles when Ponce defeated Perez 6-1, 6-2 and went up 5-0 after Frankel defeated Ivanov 6-3, 6-3 at No.2. Condos defeated Blanco 6-4 in the first set, but Blanco came back and won the second 6-3. Candos finished the win with a 10-4 win in the third.
