Big Second-Half Run Leads ECU to Win Over A&T

Jazmin Harris finishes with 16 points and nine rebounds.

GREENVILLE, NC – North Carolina A&T had trouble taking care of the basketball Monday night, resulting in the East Carolina Pirates coming away with a 79-49 win over the A&T Aggies women's basketball team at Minges Coliseum.

The Aggies (5-5) committed a season-high 39 turnovers, which helped the Pirates (8-4) score 33 points off those turnovers. A&T also had its lowest scoring output of the season, shooting 36.5 percent from the floor and 5-for-17 (.294) from 3-point range.

It didn't help that A&T's second-leading scorer and leading 3-point shooter, Maleia Bracone received her third foul with 7:51 remaining in the first half. ECU also had a decided advantage in the paint, outscoring the Aggies 34-18.

"We ran into a well-prepared team tonight," said A&T head coach Tarrell Robinson. "Credit goes to (ECU head coach Kim) McNeill and her staff for the game's outcome tonight. I've got to do a better job of preparing our young women to play. We will learn from this and continue to improve."

Graduate Jazmin Harris led the Aggies with 16 points and nine rebounds on 7-for-14 shooting. Harris is shooting 58.3 percent from the floor (28-for-48) and averaging 16.5 points in her last four games.

A & T never got into an offensive rhythm throughout the night. They struggled against the Pirates zone early as ECU scored the game's first nine points before sophomore Jordyn Dorsey knocked down a three from the wing.

Dorsey's jumper got the Aggies going as they started to get the ball to Harris. A Harris putback put the Aggies down seven, 16-9, with 1:17 remaining in the first quarter.

Seconds later, Harris took a pass from sophomore Nahndi Smith and made a spin move toward the basket to score to get the Aggies to within five. After the Pirates connected on a free throw, Harris stepped outside the paint for a short baseline jumper to send the Aggies into the second quarter trailing 17-13.

Despite losing Bracone early in the second quarter, a Dorsey jump shot from the free throw line pulled the Aggies to within three at 20-17 with 7 ½ minutes remaining in the first half. However, ECU responded by scoring five straight points before two Dorsey free throws broke up the run. ECU transfer Laila Acox then rebounded a D'Mya Tucker miss and put it in the basket to get the Aggies to within four at 25-21 with 4:06 remaining.

ECU took over from there. The Pirates ended the first half on a 10-2 run that culminated with an Amiya Joyner 3-pointer as time expired in the first half to give ECU a 37-23 halftime lead. A&T turned the ball over four times during the run.

A&T never got the lead under double figures in the second half. They did get it to 11, 47-36, on a Harris putback with 2:12 remaining in the third quarter. But a 3-point play by Micah Dennis and a 3-pointer from Dennis sparked a 10-0 Pirates run to give ECU a 57-36 lead going into the fourth quarter. ECU's lead grew to 36 in the fourth quarter as the Pirates outscored the Aggies 22-13 in the fourth quarter.

Bracone scored all 10 of her points in the second half on 4-for-7 shooting from the field and 2-for-4 shooting from three. Danae McNeal led the Pirates with 19 points.
