EAST GREENSBORO – The North Carolina A&T Aggies lost their home finale to Northeastern in three sets (25-15, 14, 14) in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) volleyball action Monday afternoon at Moore Gymnasium.
"We did some good things," head coach Hal Clifton said. "We didn't do good things long enough, and Northeastern had an answer for everything that we tried to change and tried to throw at them. They played very well today. We couldn't get it going today for some reason. We live to fight another day. We'll get back in the gym to train to get better and keep working hard."
A&T somewhat got it going midway through the first. After trailing 20-12, the Aggies did go on a 4-1 spurt to get to within six at 21-15. But two service aces aided a 4-0 Huskies run to end the set. The second set saw the Huskies get out to another big lead at 15-5. A&T cut the lead to seven at 18-11, but the Huskies scored a quick two points, leading to a timeout by the Aggies.
After the timeout, the Huskies outscored the Aggies 3-1 as Marika Virthe gave Northeastern set point with a kill. A block assist from Mallory Porcher and Jada Hampton kept A&T alive for the moment, but Virthe and Anya Korbut teamed on a block to give the Huskies the set and a 2-0 lead in the match.
A&T had a much better start to the third set as a Sawtelle kill tied the set at 7. The Huskies outscored the Aggies 7-2 from there to take a 14-9 lead. A&T never got any closer than five from there as Northeastern's lead grew to nine, 23-14.
A Chiara Napoli kill and a Mallory Porcher service ace cut the lead to 23-16, but Northeastern scored on a kill and a block assist in winning the set and the match.
Erica Staunton led Northeastern with nine kills. The Aggies dropped to 9-15 overall and 5-9 in the CAA. They have a hold of eighth place in the conference. The top eight teams in the league qualify for the conference tournament, Nov. 17-19 in Towson, Md. The Aggies enter this weekend with a bye before traveling to Charleston, S.C., to face College of Charleston Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. for the final two regular-season matches of the season.
"It gives our players a chance to decompress," Clifton said of the bye weekend. "It gives them a chance to focus on some school work. It gives them a chance to recover. It gives them a chance to breathe and get their bodies in shape. It's a good time for us to have this bye weekend, and we are giving the players enough time to step away and regroup."
