EAST GREENSBORO -- The Big South Conference released its weekly football honors on Monday.
The conference named North Carolina A&T sophomore cornerback Karon Prunty its defensive player of the week after Prunty intercepted two passes and recorded three tackles in the Aggies 24-13 win over Bryant University Saturday in A&T's 2022 conference opener at Truist Stadium.
Prunty, a Division I transfer out of Kansas, intercepted his first two passes as an Aggie after recording 11 pass defenses and picking off one pass as a Jayhawk in 2020.
Prunty's two picks were a part of a four-interception night for A&T. His first interception ended the Bulldogs' attempt at a last-second score to end the first half. Bryant had possession on its 45-yard line as quarterback Zevi Eckhaus launched a deep pass toward the end zone that the 6-foot-2 Prunty leaped in the air to secure at the Aggies 6. His second INT came in the fourth quarter, giving the Aggies the ball at the Bryant 34-yard line. Prunty also made three tackles, including two solos.
"Defensively, we had four picks that were very important to our success. I give this young man (Karon Prunty) credit because he had two of those. He can't catch, but in some kind of way, he caught them," said A&T football coach Sam Washington, jokingly.
Prunty has 22 tackles, two interceptions and three pass defenses on the season. A&T has four weekly honors on the season. Running back Bhayshul Tuten (offensive), running back Wesley Graves (freshman) and placekicker Andrew Brown (special teams) all earned Big South weekly honors on Sept. 26. Prunty and the Aggies are off this weekend before facing Division II Edward Waters Saturday, October 15 at 1 p.m., at Truist Stadium.
