WHY A&T GOT THE W: Hot Start. The Aggies hit seven of their first nine shots to take an 18-0 lead. It was pretty much over from there.
WHY RADFORD DID NOT GET THE W: The Aggies were too much early. Radford had seven first-quarter turnovers and only three first-quarter field goals. The Aggies scored 10 points off those turnovers.
CRUCIAL: The Aggies sharing of the basketball became contagious. A&T assisted on 13 of their first 15 field goals. Six different players recorded those assists.
EAST GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T shot a season-best 53.7 percent from the floor en route to an 88-47 Big South Conference women's basketball win against Radford Thursday night at Corbett Sports Center. The win marked the Aggies fourth straight win as they improved to 7-10 overall.
After an 0-3 start in Big South play, the Aggies are now 4-3, but they still find themselves 3 1/2 games behind Campbell in the standings.
A&T head coach
Tarrell Robinson said he is proud to see his players have a sense of urgency after the slow start. The Aggies scored more than 80 points at home for the third straight game. They have scored 80-plus points at home four times this season and 70-plus points at Corbett five times. Their 88 points tied a season-high.
The Aggies also shot better than 50 percent (.537) for the first time this season while holding an opponent to under 50 points for the second time.
"That was all them," said Robinson. "They did a great job of executing and understanding our approach and how we wanted to come into this game. We obviously wanted to defend, but we also wanted to execute offensively."
A&T had plenty of offense to start the game. Junior guard
Shareka McNeill (Charlotte, N.C.) swished a 3-pointer to get things started, and the Aggies looked almost flawless from there. Sophomore guard
Faith Blackstone (Harrisburg, Pa.) grabbed a defensive rebound and swooped to the basket for two more points.
Blackstone followed by lobbing a pass down low to center
Jazmin Harris (McLeansville, N.C.) for a 7-0 Aggies lead. A baseline jumper from forward
Chanin Scott (Charlotte, N.C.) off a setup from McNeill kept the run going.
Harris returned the favor to Blackstone. She found Blackstone cutting to the basket for a layup and a foul that led to a 12-0 lead. After an Aggies free throw, Harris continued her distributing ways. Harris spotted McNeill open for another three from the high post to put the Aggies ahead by 16. A Scott steal and layup completed the Aggies 18-0 run to start the game as the Aggies carved the Highlanders defense apart with 7-for-9 shooting during the run.
The game was never in doubt from there. The Aggies shot 63 percent from the floor in the first half to take a 47-17 lead at the half. The Highlanders never got any closer than 29 in the second half. Forty-one points marked A&T's largest margin of victory this season.
A&T's sense of urgency will continue as their next two games are on the road against teams in Gardner-Webb (5-3) and Campbell (8-0), who are ahead of them in the standings.
QUOTABLE: "I don't know if I should not practice the day before all the time. We did just a walk-through, got up some shots during shoot-around and talked about how to attack. They executed."
