Â
NORTH CAROLINA A&T AGGIES (8-9, 3-0 BIG SOUTH): It looks like it has taken no time for the Aggies to develop some heated rivalries in the Big South Conference. On Wednesday, the Aggies reunited with their Historically Black College and or University (HBCU) brethren Hampton, and the fireworks were explosive with eight technical fouls and three ejections. Hampton cut a 25-point second-half lead to seven before the Aggies prevailed 67-59.
Â
Next, the Aggies travel down the road to face High Point University in what could develop into an anticipated rivalry game as time moves on.Â
Â
The HPU Panthers are expecting a sellout crowd at the newly-opened Qubein Center. The Panthers will play an Aggies team who has retooled his rotation. One of the best assist men in NCAA history,
Kameron Langley, and mid-range jump shot expert
Tyler Maye are coming off the bench. Scoring point guard
David Beatty and lethal 3-point man
Demetric Horton are the starting backcourt, showcasing the Aggies tremendous depth as they defend a four-game winning streak Saturday night.Â
Â
Head coach
Will Jones is in his third season and his second full season as the Aggies head coach. He took over on an interim basis on December 24, 2019. Jones is 22-5 (.815) against conference opponents, and he is 33-25 (.569) overall as the Aggies headman. Last season, Jones led the Aggies to their first regular-season title in 31 years, and in 2020 he was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) coach of the year.Â
Â
HIGH POINT UNIVERSITY PANTHERS (6-9, 0-1 BIG SOUTH):Â Like many other schools in the country, HPU has run into some COVID concerns. The Panthers Jan.5 game versus
Â
Winthrop and their Jan. 8 game against Longwood was postponed. However, they did on the court at USC Upstate, losing 66-65 on Wednesday to the Spartans. Alex Holt, 6-foot-8 forward out of Lexington, N.C., led the Panthers with 16 points on 7-for-9 shooting. Bryson Childress, a 5-8 guard out of Albemarle, N.C., connected on 5 of 9 3-pointers.Â
Â
John-Michael Wright (6-0, Fayetteville, N.C.) leads the Panthers in scoring (19.1 points per game) and assists (3.9 apg). He is also shooting .407 (37-for-91) from 3-point range. Zach Austin (6-5, Winston-Salem, N.C.) averages 13.1 points, leads the team in rebounding at 7.8 per game and blocked shots at 2.9 per game.Â
Â
HPU is the worst free throw shooting team in the league (.612), but the Panthers are the second-best 3-point shooting team (.377).Â
Â
Tubby Smith returned to his alma mater in 2018 after earning national prominence at various Power Five schools. Smith has guided five Division I teams (Tulsa, Georgia, Kentucky, Minnesota and Texas Tech) to the NCAA tournament. He is one of only two coaches in NCAA history to accomplish the feat. His prominent achievement as a head coach is leading Kentucky to the 1998 national championship. He is a three-time national coach of the year, and he comes into Saturday's game 637-364 (.636) in his career.
Â
THE SERIES:Â Saturday night will mark only the fifth matchup between the two teams despite their proximity. The Aggies lead the series 3-1, with the last game occurring on Nov. 30, 2004, in Corbett Sports Center. The Aggies came away with a 77-68 win.Â
Â
QUOTABLES:Â "They have a conference player of the year candidate in John-Michael (Wright). He takes a lot of shots, but he's a good player with a couple of teammates that play off of him. They're going to be at home in their new arena, but I still expect us to go out and win the game."

Â
GAME NOTES:Â
- There have been four different presidents (George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Donald Trump, Joe Biden) since A&T last played HPU in a men's basketball game.Â
- The last time the Panthers played the Aggies at their home arena, they came away with an 88-63 win on Dec. 27, 2003. The first meeting between the two teams occurred in 1966, with the Aggies coming away with an 84-79 win.Â
- Tyler Maye, a 6-1 guard from Farmville, N.C., recorded his first career double-double on Wednesday with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Maye also had five offensive rebounds from his guard position.Â
- Maye is one of the best offensive rebounders in the conference, averaging 2.1 per game to rank fifth.Â
- A&T started the season 0-7 on the road, but they have won their last two.
- Six of A&T's first seven opponents outrebounded them. But with the addition of Collin Smith to go along with outstanding rebounding guards in Marcus Watson and Tyler Maye, the Aggies have improved dramatically. The Aggies have a plus-35 rebounding advantage over their last four opponents combined. Coincidentally, the Aggies are on a four-game winning streak. Â
- Graduate guard Kameron Langley has 842 career assists to rank 22nd all-time. He needs just 58 more to become one of only 15 players in NCAA history to record 900 or more career assists.Â
