THE NORTH CAROLINA A&T AGGIES (5-3): The Aggies went 2-0 during the Aggie/Phoenix Volley for Unity Tournament last weekend with wins against N.C. Central (3-0) and Mercer (3-1).
Edie Brewer (6-foot, GR, setter, West Chester, Ohio) and Naiya Sawtelle (6-0, FR, outside hitter, Stuart, Fla.) earned all-tournament honors. Brewer averaged 5.29 assists, 1.43 kills, 1.43 digs, 0.86 blocks and 0.71 service aces. Sawtelle averaged 3.29 kills, 1.14 digs and 0.57 blocks.
N.C. A&T will face the second of the three ACC opponents on its schedule this season when they travel to Winston-Salem on Tuesday. The Aggies lost to Clemson 3-1 on Aug. 28. N.C. A&T plays at Virginia Tech on Sept. 28 at 3 p.m.
Head coach Hal Clifton is six wins away from his 100th career win. Over the last four seasons, the Aggies have posted a 55-43 (.561) overall record and a 34-8 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) record. They have recorded at least a .500 winning percentage over the past four seasons.
THE WAKE FOREST DEMON DEACONS (7-2): Wake Forest has won its last four matches, including a 3-1 win over 2021 spring NCAA tournament participant Lipscomb. Ashley Slater leads the Demon Deacons in kills per set (3.13). Andrea Fuentes leads the team in assist per set (11.52), and Kalani Whillock is the leader in digs at 4.45 per set. McSweeney comes into the match the leader in blocks at 1.06 per set.
Randi Smart is in her second full season at the helm of the volleyball program. She has posted an 11-27 record in two-plus seasons.
THE SERIES: Wake Forest leads the series 3-0. The previous meeting between Wake and A&T occurred in 2008. was in 2008.
CAREER NOTES:
- Edie Brewer has 755 kills and needs 10 to move into eighth place on the school's all-time list. Steffani Eddins (2002-03) is in eighth place with 764.
- Brewer has 148 service aces and needs 38 to surpass Brenden Chatman (2004-07), who is second on the all-time list with 185.
- Brewer has 857 digs and needs 27digs to move past Dunesha Taylor (1999-01), who had 883 at N.C. A&T.
- Shaylynn Hall has 172 block assists. She is chasing Brewer (173) for sixth place.
- Andrea Laboy-Rivera has 1,161 digs and needs 14 to move into third place past Judith Ball (2001-03), who had 1,174 during her career.
