ORANGEBURG, S.C. – North Carolina A&T stayed perfect in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Thursday night as they cruised to a three-set win over South Carolina State (25-11, 13, 11) at Dukes Gymnasium.
A&T (5-1, 5-0 MEAC) won its fifth straight match as A&T jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the first set. The Aggies were never threatened from there. They outscored the Bulldogs 8-1 to take a 20-8 lead aided by two SCSU attack errors. Macenzie Richards gave the Aggies a 23-9 lead with a kill, and the set ended on an SCSU attack error.
Set No. 2 was much of the same. A Maya Rembert service ace did give the Bulldogs a 4-3 lead. The Aggies ran off four straight points to take an 8-4 as they never trailed again in the set. The Aggies lead grew to double-figures on a Tasmyn Fahey kill. The Bulldogs never got the lead under 10 again as sophomore Addy Warfield ended the set with an ace.
The Aggies double-digit lead happened quickly in the third set as they jumped out to a 17-7 lead thanks to three consecutive aces from Mallory Porcher. SCSU did get the lead under 10 at 17-8 on an Aggies service error, but senior Edie Brewer responded with a kill to push the lead back to 10.
With the Aggies leading 21-10, the set and match ended with an Aggies 4-1 run capped by a kill from Fahey to keep the Aggies winning ways going.
The Aggies remain in Orangeburg to face SCSU at 1 p.m., Friday.
