Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Short-handed Aggies Lose Big South Opener

The Aggies played without their top three scorers.

EAST GREENSBORO – In North Carolina A&T's first women's basketball Big South Conference game in history, the Longwood Lancers defeated the Aggies 76-45 at Corbett Sports Center Wednesday night.

The Aggies dropped to 3-8 overall. The Lancers ended their six-game losing streak to improve to 4-8 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The loss ends the Aggies 11-game home winning streak.

The Aggies entered the game missing the top three scorers that accounted for 52.3 percent of their offense, 41.1 percent of their rebounding and 47.1 percent of their steals.

Kiana Adderton recorded her first career double-double as an Aggie with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Shalya Nelson added nine points and seven rebounds and Jasmen Walton added seven points, three assists and three steals.

Longwood went inside early to forward Akila Smith as the reigning Big South defensive player of the year, scored seven of the Lancers first nine points to give the Lancers a 9-2 lead. However, the Aggies fought back early as an Adderton layup, and a mid-range jumper from Jordyn Dorsey made it a 9-6 game.

Lancers leading scorer and All-Big South performer Kyla McMakin then took over. She scored seven points during an 11-0 run, giving Longwood a 20-6 lead.

After the Aggies scored the next two points, but Adriana Shipp came off the bench to hit a three. Smith then scored again before two Levossie Taylor free throws made it a 25-10 game at the end of the first quarter. Longwood led by as many as 25.

Nelson scored 18 seconds remaining in the first half to get the Aggies within 19 before Tra'daja Smith hit a jump shot at the buzzer to give the Lancers a 46-25 halftime lead.

The Aggies never got any closer and will try to rebound on New Year's Day with a 1 p.m. game at Hampton.

McMakin led the Lancers with 29 points on 12-for-19 shooting from the field and 5-for-9 shooting from 3-point range. Akila Smith had 22 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocks.
