Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

A&T Falls to Local Rival Elon

Two different Aggies record double-doubles.

A&T STATISTICAL LEADERS: G Chanin Scott (25 pts., 10-for-17 FGs, 10 rebs., 2 steals), Jazmin Harris (12 pts., 5-for-10 FGs, 10 rebs.), Sean Kelly Darks (9 pts., 4-for-6 FGs., 3 assists).

ELON STATISTICAL LEADERS: Ariana Nance (19 pts., 6-for-11 FGs, 4 assists, 3 rebs.), Brie Perpignan (16 pts., 6-for-10 FGs, 8 assists, 5 rebs.), Evonna McGill (16 pts., 6-for-11 FGs, 6 rebs.), Kayla Liles (10 pts., 6 assists, 5 rebs.).

WHY A&T DID NOT GET THE W: Elon had a decided advantage at the free-throw line in the second half. The Phoenix went there 14 times in the second half, while the Aggies only had six attempts. Elon made 10 second-half free throws. The Aggies made four.

WHY ELON GOT THE W: 3-Pointers. Elon shot 52.6 (10-for-19) percent from the 3-point line, including 4-for-5 in the final quarter.

CRUCIAL: A&T cut the Phoenix lead to 70-66 with 1:50 to play. The Phoenix then netted two 3-pointers over the next 90 seconds while the Aggies missed two free throws and a layup blocked in the same span.

ELON – The understanding of execution and timing started to display itself on the court for the North Carolina A&T women's basketball team Monday night at Elon's Schar Center. But Elon's hot shooting overcame A&T's better job of taking care of the basketball in a 76-66 Elon win over the Aggies.

After 13 first-half turnovers, the Aggies committed only five in the second half and just one in the fourth quarter. A&T's one fourth-quarter turnover took place six seconds into the period. After that, the Aggies were turnover-free.

It contributed to the Aggies overcoming a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit. But Elon's perimeter shooting kept the Aggies at a distance in the fourth.

Redshirt junior guard Shareka McNeill (Charlotte, N.C.) scored in the paint to get the Aggies to within six at 64-58. After a Phoenix free throw, senior center Jazmin Harris (McLeansville, N.C.) put the Aggies down five, 65-60 with 4:18 remaining.

But as became customary in the fourth quarter, Elon stopped the Aggies rally with a 3-pointer as Ariana Nance connected on a three to push the lead to eight. Then, behind six points from graduate guard Chanin Scott (Charlotte, N.C.), the Aggies went on a 6-2 run to cut the Phoenix's lead to 70-66 with 1:50 to play.

The Aggies had a chance to cut the lead to two, but Evonna McGill blocked the attempt and grabbed the rebound. Vanessa Taylor turned the opportunity into a made 3-pointer to make it 73-66. After two missed free throws from the Aggies, Nance netted another three to put the game away.

Elon improved to 4-0 on the season, while the Aggies dropped to 0-5. The win broke the all-time series tie as the Phoenix now lead the series, 8-7. Scott and Harris registered double-doubles as Scott recorded her sixth double-double as an Aggie and Harris recorded her first.

A&T committed nine first-quarter turnovers and trailed 21-14 at the end of the period. The Aggies then had to rally from a 12-point first-half deficit by going on a 10-4 run to end the half and head into the locker room, trailing 37-31.

"I thought we survived a run in the first quarter," said A&T coach Tarrell Robinson. "I talked to them at halftime about us being able to get some shots beyond transition. We took advantage of that, which got us back in the game, being down by six at the half.

QUOTABLE: "We've got to take care of the ball. That's one of the things that I mention, executing and timing; our timing when we pass the ball in the post and when we pass it to the next open person. We've got to get better with that."
