Aggies Win Easily Over Averett

Six Aggies score in double figures.

EAST GREENSBORO – Six North Carolina A&T women's basketball players scored in double-figures as the Aggies led from start-to-finish in a 102-36 win over Averett Sunday afternoon at Corbett Sports Center.

The Aggies scheduled the game on Thursday after their two games with S.C. State planned for this weekend were rescheduled for next weekend because of contact tracing for COVID-19.

Senior forward Deja Winters led the Aggies with her second consecutive 20-plus point performance as she scored 21 points on 9-for-17 shooting from the floor. She added seven rebounds, two assists and four steals.

Freshman guard D'mya Tucker scored a career-high 16 points on 6-for-7 shooting from the floor and added a game-high six steals to go along with five rebounds and five assists. Sophomore guard Shayla Nelson added a career-high 14 points and a game-high and career-high nine rebounds.

Senior forward Jayla Jones-Pack and freshman Sean Kelly Darks each had 13 points. Jones-Pack shot 6-for-12 from the floor and recorded six rebounds and two blocks. Kelly Darks shot 5-for-8 and totaled four rebounds, five steals and two assists.

Junior guard Jasmen Walton added 14 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the floor with three rebounds and four assists. Freshman guard Asjah Inniss posted a game-high seven assists with five points, six steals and four rebounds.

The Aggies recorded 23 steals and forced Averett into 37 turnovers. The Aggies also shot 57.5 (42-for-73) percent from the floor and outrebounded the Cougars 51-30.

N.C. A&T started the game on a 10-0 run over the first 3 ½ minutes of the first quarter. Five different Aggies scored in that span. N.C. A&T ended the first quarter on an 8-0 run as a steal by Inniss led to a Tucker layup giving Aggies a 32-11 lead at the end of the period.

N.C. A&T then started the second quarter by scoring 10 straight points to take a commanding 42-11 lead over the first three minutes of the quarter. The Cougars scored their basket of the quarter at the 1:28 mark. By the time they scored, the Aggies were cruising with a 59-13 advantage.

The Cougars trailed 61-18 at the half after a Courtney Hunt free throw for Averett.

Averett opened the second half with a 7-1 run to make 62-25 with 8:05 remaining in the third quarter. But the Aggies scored the next 18 points to leave little doubt if there ever was any.

Genesis Weiters led the Cougars with nine points and six rebounds. Camryn Lunsford had eight points, six rebounds and five assists.

The Aggies are back in action this weekend with a trip to Orangeburg, S.C., for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opener. N.C. A&T faces S.C. State
Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m.
