Aggie Women Fight Off NSU Comeback, Win Big

Chanin Scott secures double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

EAST GREENSBORO – The North Carolina A&T Aggies women's basketball team defeated the Norfolk State Spartans, 60-47, inside the Corbett Sports Center on Saturday afternoon in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) action. It was the Aggies fifth straight win.

"In these games being able to walk away with a victory after responding to what is an experienced, well-coached Norfolk State team, I'm happy we got away with a win," said N.C. A&T coach Tarrell Robinson. "This being our sixth game of the season and playing in the conference as we take steps to try to win a championship, this was a positive for us. Now we can go back and talk about the things we need to fix, so I'm pleased."

The Aggies (5-1, 3-0 MEAC) found themselves ahead, 12-10, over the Spartans (1-4, 0-1 MEAC) after the first quarter. N.C. A&T exploded on a 12-4 run to start the second, thanks in part to back-to-back 3-pointers from senior forward Deja Winters, who nailed three threes total in the period.

"Deja is Deja," said Robinson. "She's a big-time player and clutch. She reminds me a little of Steve Rush (men's basketball all-time leader in 3-point shots made) – knocks those shots down, and it doesn't matter who is in her face. Winters and Chanin Scott played huge for us."

The Aggies held Norfolk State to 6-for-18 shooting in the period while shooting 11-for-20 themselves and outscoring the Spartans, 26-13, to claim a 38-23 advantage at the half.

The Spartans came storming back in the third, outscoring the Aggies, 18-7, and closing the deficit to four, 45-41, heading into the fourth.

Norfolk State got six points from both freshman guard Niya Fields and redshirt junior guard Jalynn Holmes and held N.C. A&T to 3-for-11 shooting in the period.

The Aggies returned to form in the fourth, however. They outscored the Spartans 16-6 while holding them to 23.1 percent shooting. N.C. A&T also secured six second-chance points courtesy of five offensive rebounds.

Scott had a game-high 16 points, and Winters finished with 12, including 4-for-7 shooting from 3-point range. She leads the MEAC in 3-pointers made per game.

Due to the COVID scheduling, the Aggies and the Spartans will play again at 2 p.m., Sunday at Corbett Sports Center.

"Neither one of us showed our true hand this game," said Robinson. "We were trying some things, seeing what worked and didn't work. I'm sure tomorrow they will be a totally different team showing different stuff.

With it being tournament style (playing back-to-back days), we're going to watch film and talk about some things we need to adjust. We're not going to do a whole lot of physical stuff. It's more about the mental preparation right now."
